Neil Oliver: Welcome to a walk around Kilmartin Glen. Nowadays, this place feels tranquil and fairly isolated from the outside world. But in prehistoric times, it was anything but.
A thriving community once lived around here and the whole area is studded with the monuments, standing stones and rock art they left behind. As we'll hear, they were a dynamic combination. Spiritual people who were self-sufficient yet worldly and well travelled too. And when the Bronze Age came to Scotland, they made the most of it and grew extremely wealthy. As tour guides, we have three experts on ancient history of Kilmartin. All of them closely linked to the area in different ways.

Caroline Wickham-Jones writes in the Scotsman: The Atmosphere of Kilmartin Glen hits visitors at once. At first it can be difficult to pin down. It is not until the eye becomes accustomed to the landscape does one begin to spot the cairns and stone settings that mark this place to the north of Lochgilphead as one of great antiquity and sanctity.
Kilmartin House Museum notes that there are more than 350 ancient monuments within six miles of the Argyllshire village of Kilmartin, many of which are prehistoric. These form one of the most remarkable collections of Stone Age sites in Scotland: an assembly of burial mounds.
The stone circles and standing stones were built 5,000 years ago when the inhabitants of the glen made this one of the most important ceremonial sites of their era.
