Lindow submitted by Vicky : Lindow Moss near Wilmslow where two or possibly three bog bodies including Lindow Man or Pete Marsh (now in the British Musuem) were discovered in the 1980s. A prehistoric trackway was also reported in the area in the 19th century. The layer of sphagnum peat in which the bodies lay has now almost completely disappeared due to commercial peat cutting on the Moss. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The Home Shopping Channel in the US is marketing the ‘Essence of Time’ range of anti-ageing cosmetics reportedly made from the peat that preserved Pete Marsh – Britain’s best preserved bog body.
The peat – supposedly from Lindow Moss in Cheshire - is labelled as the active ingredient in the hair and beauty products which also include three shades of lipstick.
However the Managing Director of Croghan Peat Industries who have been extracting the Lindow Moss peat since 1991 claims to have never sold any peat to US customers.
The peat has proved to have preservative qualities as the bog body was discovered in 1983 leading to excitement in both the media and archaeological circles.
