Knockinaam Standing Stone
Knockinaam Standing Stone submitted by PaulM : Standing stone near Knockinaam Lodge Hotel This standing stone is quite small (~1.5 m) and unremarkable except for the hand recent agricultural development has dealt it. Set a little way back from the lane that runs from Portpatrick to Meikle Port of Spittal at NX027524 the stone has become partially buried by the recent construction of a haylage store. A by-pass planned for a village on the A75 has hit the skids - due to a henge.

The Dumfries and Galloway Standard reports that the Scottish Executive has abandoned plans for the Dunragit by-pass on the A75 in Dumfries and Galloway. The proposed route ran through a wood south of the village which turned out to be an archaeological goldmine.

Engineers were told to keep their hands off by Historic Scotland.

For the wood is a listed archeological site which contains a buried henge, meaning that by law a road can’t be built.

Looking at other options has also proved problematic - a motte is located on the northern edge of the wood, right on the line of the only viable alternative! As a result the Executive decided the bypass wasn’t viable.

An Executive spokesman said: “The motte is clearly visible as a large mound in the northern fringes of the wood. To establish whether or not that corridor would be a possibility for a bypass line, a detailed archaeological investigation would be required costing an estimated £250,000.

“A study concluded that the cost of such a scheme would be high and that the economics would be highly negative. As a result, we have reluctantly been forced to the conclusion that a bypass of Dunragit is not a viable option.”
