DiscoveriesArchaeologists in Ireland have recreated a prehistoric musical instrument known as the Mayophone. As reported in the Times online this week, the original Mayophone (a long wooden tube bound with a spiral bronze ribbon) was found in 1791 in a bog at Bekan, Co Mayo, in western Ireland. It has yet to be radiocarbon dated but initial thoughts are that it probably dates to the Bronze Age.
A replica of the instrument has been made by Simon O’Dwyer, of Prehistoric Music Ireland. Preliminary tests indicate that this instrument, which could be the earliest known member of the bassoon family, is highly sophisticated and perhaps unique in the world
