They were meant to be a piece of modern art, but now Druids are worshipping at the granite standing stones in Hester's Way Park, Cheltenham. Last Sunday six druids clad in ceremonial robes gathered at the stones to celebrate the full moon.
Veronica Hammond, arch druid of the Cotswold Order, said: "The stones have electromagnetic qualities and the quartz has energy."

Druids believe in the natural energy of the earth and say the stones are an outlet for it. A group went back to Hester's Way Park, off Princess Elizabeth Way, for the full moon on October 14. The standing stones, which point towards GCHQ's Doughnut, were unveiled in July. Each piece has a theme - symbols, languages, chattering, text messaging, newspapers, prayer and two code stones.

The 11-strong Cotswold Order of Druids celebrates its 10th anniversary next month. Mrs Hammond said: "Some people think it's all about black magic, invoking demons, rushing around with no clothes on or mutilating things. Druids have nothing to do with the devil or satanic worship."

Artist Gordon Young created the stones his studio in Scotland to produce "Cheltenham's Stonehenge". Children, college students, GCHQ workers, local community groups and businesses provided inspiration for the text, markings and symbols. The stones were funded by £75,000 from IAP, the company responsible for constructing the GCHQ doughnut at Benhall.

Just once I'd like to see one of these "Stonehenge of the North/Italy" etc have a Lintel in place.
Just one would do!
