Dog centre pause for ancient remains hunt

Experts believe important finds could lie under the proposed building near Bala. Gwynedd Archaeological Planning Service stepped in after realising there is a prehistoric and Roman site close by."Our concern is that there might be similar remains at this site at Ysgubor Isaf," said archaeologist Emily La Trobe-Bateman.
"There is a very important prehistoric and Roman site in a nearby field, as well as similar sites further away, which did come to light when the National Eisteddfod was held in Bala in 1997," she explained.
"We are not objecting to the Ysgubor Isaf site as such, but we need to protect it."
The scientists plan to use trace changes in the soil which would indicate remains, although there are no plans for a dig.
"There may be nothing there, but bearing in mind the closeness to a known prehistoric site then we feel that a survey is necessary," she added
"We are in effect playing safe and the development will depend on what is found below ground."
In his report to Gwynedd Council's Meirionnydd Area Planning Committee, Mark Roberts said it was proposed to establish an international sheepdog and rural life centre on the site, which will comprise an exhibition ring, exhibition buildings, a shop, cafe, kitchen, offices and learning rooms.
He noted the remains of several agricultural buildings can be seen on site, together with an old mill.
It is proposed to keep the existing cart house and use it as the main entrance.
Part of the site is in a dell, which can be turned into an open air amphitheatre. Parking areas will be created, and earth mounds built to hide extensive areas of the development.
Recommending approval of the application in principle, Mr Roberts emphasised planning permission would be subject to the final observations of the Gwynedd Archaeological Planning Service. His further recommendation that the application be deferred pending an archaeological report was accepted by members.
Coun Elwyn Edwards, said: "We need to safeguard whatever is there, and I therefore agree to a deferment pending the receipt of the archaeological survey.
"This is quite an exciting development involving an investment of some hundreds of thousands of pounds by local agency Antur Penllyn that will bring about tremendous economic benefits to the Bala area."
