Iron Age and Later PrehistoryA CAMP site likened to a Stone Age Marie Celeste has been unearthed in Hampshire. The exceptionally well preserved site, which dates back 12,500 years to the end of the last Ice Age, is of great importance because it is frozen in time. Archaeologists believe it might contain red ochre, engraved artwork, hearths, the outlines of tents and ancient footprints.
Experts have found tools of nomadic hunter-gathers at the site on the western margin of the River Avon. They believe it could have been a tool
factory.
A team led by Steve Ford, of Thames Valley Archaeological Services, found the Nea Farm site near Ringwood in May before quarrying by Tarmac Southern. Ian Wykes, of Hampshire county council, who asked for the field work, said the site was of unique archaeological importance.
