Country: Czechia (Czech Republic) Czech Archaeologists have uncovered a part of a half-meter high statue of a woman nearly 7,000 years old in the country, which was called "a find of the century," the daily Mlada fronta Dnes (MfD) reported.

Experts from Brno's Masaryk University confirmed the unique character of the statue uncovered in Masovice, South Moravia area of the Czech republic, the paper said.

The hollow legs and haunch of the female statue, made of ceramic, originate in 4,800 - 4,700 B.C., MfD wrote.

Nothing similar has been uncovered so far, according to the experts.

The statue was made by the people of the prehistorical culture known as "Moravian Painted Ceramic".

"The statue was decorated with yellow paint. It is of an immense archaeological value," archaeologist Zdenek Cizmar is quoted as saying.

Masaryk University expert Vladimir Podborsky said that the find is very unique.

"No statue of such dimensions and such type has been uncovered either in Europe or in Orient so far. It has a great scientific importance," Podborsky said.

This one would be a good one to create a 'site page' for and put it on our map "Masovice is a significant archaeological site where remains of
prehistoric settlements as well as a high number of artifacts have
been found. " - sounds interesting - anyone?

Czech archaeologists have uncovered a torso of a unique female statue
created about 7,000 years ago near Masovice (Czech Republic), which is
the second similar find in this locality [so it's not all that unique then Mr Headline Writer - MegP Ed]. The woman's statue found in
the area last summer was given the name 'Hedvika of Masovice,' while
'her sister' is called Johanka, "That is according to the female names
in the calendar on the days when the artifacts were found", head of
the archaeological research Zdenek Cizmar said.

Both sculptures, created by people of the Moravian Painted
Ceramic culture, probably served as idols, symbolizing life and
fertility. The lower part of the half-a-meter tall 'Hedvika' statue is
the oldest sculpture of such a large size found in central Europe. The
torso of 'Johanka,' measuring 35 centimeters, consists of four
fragments of the body that were put together. The legs are missing.

"It has a realistically shaped face. Distinctive ears with holes are
also interesting features. Hands, chest and lap are very well
apparent. Moreover, Johanka was completely white," said Cizmar. He
added that the statue was polished with a resin base covered with a
white colour finish.

Masovice is a significant archaeological site where remains of
prehistoric settlements as well as a high number of artifacts have
been found. Among other rarities from the locality is the 'Masovice
rondel,' of which a double circular ditch with a 110 metres in
diameter has been preserved. It served as a ritual place and possibly
as a calendar.

Archaeologists uncover unique cremation graves by coldrum on Wednesday, 21 May 2008

Archaeologists uncover unique cremation graves

Czech archaeologists have uncovered unique cremation graves in Prostejov that date back to the Neolithic period of the Linear Pottery culture and that indicate that people believed in human soul's existence 7,000 years ago already, daily Mlada fronta Dnes wrote Wednesday.

The graves were uncovered during construction of a new industrial zone on the eastern edge of the town.

"This is the first cremation burial site of the Linear-Pottery-culture to be uncovered on Czech soil. Below it there are skeleton graves of people of the same culture. The change in the burial method indicates a change in the ideology or religion of the people. The cremation of the dead is tied with people's belief in the existence of the soul. Up to now experts have supposed that this belief appeared far later," archaeologist Miroslav Smid told the daily.

About a hundred graves have been uncovered in Prostejov. The archaeologists believe this is about one-tenth of the local burial site. They have also uncovered remnants of a settlement, including shelters and production buildings, Mlada fronta Dnes writes.

Another burial site of people of Linear-Pottery-culture on Czech territory was previously uncovered in Vedrovice near Znojmo, but there are only skeleton graves there.

I saw a picture of this statue fragment after a bit of a search and it certainly is unique! It looks strangely like the lower part of Gort, the robot in The Day the Earth Stood Still.
