Clactonian is a British Lower Palaeolithic flake tool industry named after the site at Clacton-on-Sea. Also from this remotest time is a yew spear point nearly fifteen inches long. It is the only surviving wooden artefact from Lower Palaeolithic Britain and therefore the oldest.
During the Neolithic, the great forest of Essex was heavily cleared for farming. There are eleven henges in Essex, but little can be seen of them today. The Bronze Age yields more with many barrows and settlements of round houses and caches of smiths' tools and materials. Beautiful, mysterious and little known is the wooden idol found in the estuary mud on the site of the Ford factory at Dagenham.
With the Iron Age came tribalism and the magnificent hillforts in Epping Forest and Wallbury. A massive series of ramparts were thrown around Colchester long before the Romans came. This was the territory of the Trinovantes.
Apart from pebbles and a few sarsen and puddingstone boulders, there is no stone in Essex and so we have no stone circles or standing stones. Aerial photography reveals the hidden past with dense coverage of crop marks overlying earlier ones that overly still earlier ones. With the ongoing sinking of Essex and rising sea levels, many sites of former occupation are now underwater and it is offshore and in the many estuaries of Essex that really exciting finds will be made.
