Cash Boost for Marine History Education

Other ArchaeologyA trust that researches, preserves and educates people in aspects of the rich and varied history beneath the waves — from Mesolithic landscapes at Bouldnor to shipwrecks on The Needles — has been boosted by a Local Heritage Initiative award of £22,000.The Hampshire and Wight Trust for Maritime Archaeology plans to use the cash, £22,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund together with an additional £3,700 from the Nationwide Building Society, to fund education packs consisting of a booklet, fact and work sheets and a CD-Rom that will be available to schools and libraries or downloadable over the internet.
Claire Campbell, a project officer at the trust, said: "This will provide unrivalled access to our work and provide children with an insight into their maritime heritage and highlight its importance."
The Sunken History Exhibition at Fort Victoria has also benefited, with part of the award being used to fund videos and a CD-rom showing footage beneath the waves, which will be on display at the museum and used to illustrate talks and lectures to reach a wider audience.
The trust, which runs the Waters of the Wight project, is a charitable organisation founded in 1991 with an ambitious long-term programme of research and educational projects, allied to forging partnerships with public sector authorities and agencies, private sector companies, universities, museums and other maritime organisations.
"Thanks to continuing support from our public and private sponsors and expanding recognition for the important role that our maritime history plays, the trust has grown steadily over the years to employ seven staff assisted by a core team of dedicated, enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteers," said Miss Campbell.
The trust has always relied heavily on the support of volunteers from the community and amateurs from further afield.
"An important aspect of our work is making the results of our research accessible to the public," said Miss Campbell.
"This is achieved firstly through our sunken history exhibition and secondly through our Friends organisation. Members of Friends are encouraged to join in with fieldwork days and attend lectures and seminars in all aspects of maritime history."
