A priceless Bronze Age canoe discovered during work on a gas pipeline has gone to Newport, up to 3,400 years since its last journey. This is how long since the one tonne dug-out canoe, (or possibly cooking trough), hewn from a single trunk of oak, last saw light of day.

Today, it was gently lifted from the site where it was discovered, near Milford Haven, west Wales, and put onto a lorry.

Stored in a specially-made crate it was then taken on a three-hour journey to Newport to undergo expert investigation.

A 3,400-year-old hollowed out log which is thought to be a Bronze Age canoe is being moved to a storage unit developed for Newport's medieval ship.

The oak relic was unearthed in August by archaeologists working on a major gas pipeline near Milford Haven.

The carefully controlled environment will help preserve it while detailed investigations are undertaken.

Only then will it be decided how and where - or even if - it can be put on display for the public.
