Cadw sites to open for Euro business

Other ArchaeologyThe euro is to be accepted at all Cadw-run historic sites in Wales from April 2004, Culture Minister Alun Pugh announced today (Thursday, 13 November). From next April the euro will be accepted as well as sterling at all 22 Cadw sites throughout Wales.From Blaenavon Ironworks to Carreg Cennen Castle, Rhuddlan Castle to the Plas Mawr Elizabethan townhouse in Conwy - in future visitors to all these popular attractions will be able to pay for their admission tickets, Cadw guidebooks and souvenirs in euro notes.
The move follows the successful pilot of the policy at Caerphilly, Caernarfon and Conwy Castles and Tintern Abbey over the summer, whose tills rang up nearly 6,000 euros (the equivalent of £4,000) in business throughout the season.
Being able to do business in euros has proved to be a useful marketing tool for these heritage sites, said Culture Minister Alun Pugh.
"Overseas visitors have told us that they appreciate being able to use their euros while on holiday in Wales, which is why it will be accepted at all Cadw sites in future," he said.
"It is a good way of attracting business and an important service we can offer our customers. Wales saw the biggest increase in visitors than any other region of the UK this year. Caernarfon and Caerphilly castles are some of Wales’ most popular attractions for oversees visitors, so it makes good business sense to accept the mainstream currency of the European Union.
"We have some fantastic historic buildings in Wales and it is important that we market them effectively so that visitors, from home and abroad, are aware and have a chance to see and enjoy this important part of our heritage."
