Jimmy Goddard looks back over his forty-one years of "treading the Track, and feeling its power." Jimmy Goddard was one of the original producers of the Ley Hunter.

These days some may snort at the concept of Ley Hunting, but if you were into stones and suchlike in the 1960s to early 1990s the Ley Hunter was at the epicentre of the subject.

Included are scans of fascinating early editions, curently 1969 to 1970 produced on very dodgy reprographic equipment. How technology has changed things! They promise that subsequent issues will be added over the coming months. This is a valuable archiving project, well done Jimmy and all and keep it up.

As an aside, there's a lot of interesting and hard-to-find information here on possible ancient sites in Surrey.

I knew Jimmy Goddard in the 70s all his papers were destroyed in a mysterious house fire nothing else was damaged!
I wonder if they could somehow be connected to Time Slips?

Sorry, I forgot to mention the reason why the old Blacksmiths comment made my hair prickle, the name of the woods I had been in were 'Cross Leys' - you can look that up on the OS Map covering Nuthampstead. I know the word has many other meanings - of course this was just a coincidence wasn't it?
By the way I score Jimmy's submission a well deserved 5.

Well I think it's split more into two camps, the spiritual 'Paganism' side and the down-to-earth 'enjoying the countryside' type viewpoint.

What does everyone else think?

Perhaps we should move this to the forum, but anyhow: It seems to me that since the demise of the Ley Hunter and similar (or perhaps the demise is as a result of the change), interest in Ley Lines and the gentle subject of 'Earth Mysteries' in general seems to have dwindled, and given way to full-blown Paganism which is much more 'hands on' shall we say. It seems many of the same people have moved their interest in that direction.

I think EM is just out of fashion at the moment, it may yet return! As us readers knew, but it was difficult to explain to anyone else, most of the material in the 1980s/90s Ley Hunters (when I got involved) was not about 'Hunting Ley Lines', indeed you could find it very interesting while not going along with that particular viewpoint at all.

Also, thinking in areas of modern academic archaeology (theoretical, cognitive) has got very close to some of those old 'fringe' ideas. I think recent books by Paul Devereux explain it best.

Andy - I just wondered why 'these days some may snort at the concept of Ley Hunting'. I have only just found this site and I am obviously out of touch/date with current concepts and approaches to Earth Mysteries. I am 61 and have been reading/studying EM and all it's many offshoots for the last 30+ years. I once subscribed to The Ley Hunter and eagerly devoured each issue. This magazine made us look much more closely at our surroundings, made us so much more aware of subleties in the landscape. If anyone should scoff at the Ley concept, and I quite understand their feelings after all these years believe me, I would refer them to my posting on the forum concerning Terr.Zodiacs.
I met an old blacksmith in a Pub in a little village called Anstey in Hertfordshire way back in the late 1970s. He was into his early 80s and we were talking about WWII - nothing to do with EMs or Leys. I mentioned some woods I had been in that day and he said "They said there used to be a secret path from there all the way into London"
That made the hairs go up on the back of my neck - why should he suddenly say that?
Was it a passed on memory of a Ley? I still think about that evening. It does not really matter what you actually believe - but getting in touch with the countryside, it's cycles and learning to love and cherish our environment, that is what is important surely?
Andy perhaps you can update an oldie, are the present young generation looking for a more scientific and archeological solution?
If so, they may be disappointed perhaps.
TLH reminded me so much of the Woolhope Club and it's field trips - with a certain Alfred Watkins taking many photographs.
