EventsCountry: England Why did Stonehenge become the monument we see today? And how did it function? Using archaeology, geology, and astronomy, a 'Burlington House Lecture' on June 21 ( the summer solstice) by two of the world’s experts on the monument explores the development of the site from humble beginnings to the most elaborate stone circle in Britain. Welsh bluestones provided the rock that transformed its fortunes, and the daily and annual motions of the sun rolling across the sky provided critical points of reference for beliefs and practices helping to sustain everyday life in the busy cultural landscape that developed around it.The lecture, at the Geological Society, will be given by Professor Tim Darvill, FSA, Professor of Archaeology at Bournemouth University and Professor Clive Ruggles, FSA, FRAS), Emeritus Professor of Archaeoastronomy at the University of Leicester. Aimed at the general public, the 'Burlington House Lectures' explore subjects straddling the interests of the five Courtyard Societies (the Society of Antiquaries of London, Royal Astronomical Society, Linnean Society of London, Royal Society of Chemistry and Geological Society of London) and the Royal Academy of Arts.
Date: Thursday 21 June 2007 Time: 6pm Venue: The Geological Society Lecture Theatre, Burlington House Admission: by ticket ONLY; further details from Jayne Phenton.
