Picking up on the current Werner Herzog film - ‘Cave of Forgotten Dreams’ - about the recently discovered Chauvet paintings, visitors to Horsham’s Carfax are invited to create a French-style cave painting of animals showing how people saw the world 30,000 years ago yet in images which are still alive to us today.
Run by Janine Creaye who specialises in Art in Public Places, this will be a drop-in activity for all ages and abilities, looking at design and beauty from a different perspective that does not involve conventional realism or polish. On display will be sample images from historic cave paintings as well as images of relevant animals, such as the mountain lion, deer, bison and horse of course - linking in with the possible medieval origins of Horsham’s name, ‘Horse Ham’, when Horsham was a major horse-trading marketplace.
Everyone will be encouraged to make a mark, whether on the main canvas or on separate pieces of paper and it is hoped that this creative display will inspire imaginations even where art is not something people believe they can do. By bringing life and movement with many simple sketchy lines in the style of cave painting the finished artwork will create an impressive panoramic image. Thanks go to Brewers of Horsham for sponsoring this activity and providing the artists materials. All participating ‘artists’ will receive a complimentary voucher for Brewers merchandise and will be able to view the finished artwork at Brewers, Redkiln Way, Horsham.
For those who prefer to work in 3D there will be the chance to take part in free paper-workshops in a marquee in the Carfax on Sunday 17 July, encouraging people to have a go and create their own French-style paper flowers in the form of paper poppies or sunflowers.
The final element of Montmartre Day on Sunday 17 July in Horsham is from Horsham’s Open Studios artists who will be displaying their artwork nearby in Montmartre-style around the railings in the Carfax for public entertainment and sale.
Montmartre Day is just one of the many activities taking place throughout Horsham FrenchFest from Friday 15 to Sunday 17 July, including an authentic French market, live music, comedy French chefs, a Petanque (Boules) competition, re-enactment Napoleonic soldiers performing drills routines around the town and more.
