A major hoard of ancient artefacts has been unearthed near Tisbury, (Wiltshire, UK). A metal detector enthusiast located more than 100 bronze items, thought to be about 2,700 years old, on a farmland site which is being kept secret. Having first found a spearhead, he decided not to disturb the ground and notified archaeologists, who were able to conduct a meticulous excavation.

The finds, from the late Bronze Age and early Iron Age, include tools such as chisels, axe heads and gouges, and weapons including fragments of a sword and scabbard and more spearheads.

Salisbury & South Wilts Museum director Adrian Green said: “It’s a very rare and important find, and it’s still fresh out of the ground. This was not previously a known archaeological site. The guy was just metal detecting as a hobby.

“What was significant about it was that he very responsibly told the finds liaison officer for the county, Katie Hinds, who is paid by the British Museum to record finds made by chance like this, rather than just digging it up himself and potentially losing valuable archaeological information.

Why is it, whenever a metal detectorist finds an important discovery, that only the archaeologist has the knowledge to excavate the objects.
many detectorist have a lot more knowledge than most archaeologist, seen and handled artefacts from the bronze age, many have taken part on excavations for years. I know many landowners that would not have an archaeologist team on their land at any price. The gap between archaeologist and metal detectorist is growing further apart day by day.
many important finds are made by detectorist and not archaeologist, one only has to watch time team to see how inexperience they are and lack of knowledge when it comes to identifying finds retrieved from the ground and these are the so called experts.
many important sites will be lost in the future due to the arrogance of archaeologist.

Why do you think having "seen and handled artefacts[...]" does qualify detectorists to excavate finds?

It depends on the knowledge of the person or detectorist of course, as i have stated before some detectorists regularly attend archaeological excavations and have some years of experience recording and removal of artefacts but are not employed as a field archaeologist.

It may be that detectorists have more knowledge of artefacts than is credited to them but that is merely one part of the archaeologist's work. An example of another useful clue which might be waiting to be unearthed is a post hole; this is a common archaelogical find but would a detectorist even notice one of these and avoid disturbing it? There is a lot more to archaeology than "handling artefacts" but I fear that is the only area of interest to detectorists.

Very good answer indeed but with modern farming today i am afraid more damage is done by deep ploughing than any detectorist would do in a life time, the finding of artefacts and coins are only part of metal detecting, many detectorists spend hours on research each week to acquire knowledge and have years of learning, reading the lay of the land and water ways all part of field walking as it is in archaeology. Thank you for your comments they were interesting.
