Ancient Art to Post-Impressionism Exhibition

From September 2004 (dates to be confirmed), Copenhagen’s internationally renowned museum, the Ny Carlsberg Glyptothek, will be making its remarkable collection available to the Royal Academy in London in autumn 2004 due to a programme of refurbishment. It will span 5,000 years of human creativity, from Etruscan terracotta figures to the masterpieces of Picasso.

Outstanding works from the museum’s collections of Antiquities and French and Danish 19th-century painting and sculpture will be shown in the UK for the first time. The museum’s collection was built up in the late 19th- and early 20th-centuries by a father and his son – Carl and Helge Jacobsen – descendents of the founder of the Danish brewing company, Carlsberg. Carl Jacobsen, son of the brewery founder, built up over a period of 30 years, one of the largest private art collections of its time, with particular emphasis on Antiquities, including outstanding examples of Greek, Roman and Etruscan sculpture.

He also acquired contemporary works by Danish Golden Age painters and sculptors such as Købke, Lundbye, Eckersberg and Bissen, and by French artists including Millet, Rodin and Carpeaux. After his death in 1914, his son Helge Carlsberg extended his father’s taste for 19th-century French art by focusing his acquisitions on the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, including notable examples of work by Monet, Sisley, Degas and Gauguin. Carl Jacobsen donated his collection to the Danish State in 1888 and 1897. It has been housed in Copenhagen ever since. This will be a unique opportunity to view some 200 works from this rich collection, demonstrating the taste and dedication of a father and son.
