A sculpture of a 400,000-year-old hand axe has been chosen as a new landmark for a heritage site. The sculpture will be put up at the main entrance of the Swanscombe Heritage Park.

It was designed by David Robinson and Peter Greenstreet of landscape architects GES Ltd, Priory Road, Dartford.

They entered it in a competition organised by the Swanscombe Heritage Park Action Group and are being given £40,000 to build it.

It is the first in a series of enhancement projects for the park.

Made of stone and stainless steel, the design is modelled on an axe discovered in the park.

Landscape architect Mr Robinson said: "We are delighted our design has been chosen to be the feature entrance for the heritage park.

"We hope the sculpture will raise the public's perception of the site's importance.''

Lets hope they build very high flood defences for these "urban villages", built on the Thames' tidal marsh land.
Carlisle recently flooded to a depth of over 15 metres. A month ago I would have said that this was an impossibility.

This announcement is presumably a sweetener for the underlying story that Kent CC are planning a huge development of 1600 homes on the Swanscombe peninsula.

I'd never heard of this:

The Swanscombe Heritage Park, in North Kent, is the site of the oldest discovered human remains in Britain. The remains are three separate pieces of skull estimated to date back 400,000 years. The first piece was discovered by AT Marston in 1935.

Declared a National Nature Reserve in 1954, the site is home to very rare and interesting wildlife. A survey conducted by Kent Wildlife Trust revealed that there are 238 species of invertebrates living in the area. More than one-third of the species listed in the park and the Craylands Gorge were rare.
