Country: Ireland (Republic of) An intriguing megalithic site with ogham carvings in a Field Report by Larry Mulligan of the New England Antiquities Research Association - does anyone have any more information on this site?

"In the mountains above Adrigole, between Kenmare and Bantry Bay is a cairn…..near the rock is one with marked Oghams; it is handsomely crossed and recrossed, so as to baffle anyone except an adept in Oghams. It is covered over with an immense stone as if to conceal them and you must stoop very low to get a good view of them." - Dr. William Grant, Tuosist 6000

So went the description in 1843 of a most unique site located in County Kerry, Ireland, by a Mr. Gahan to a Mr. J. Windele, a local antiquarian. This is the first known appearance in the local history of the Pluais Na Scriob, or Den of the Scribings.

Today the site is mostly unknown or forgotten, perhaps due to its remote location. In 1902, the noted Dublin archaeologist R. A. Macalister was unable to locate the site and concluded it probably did not exist.

The "den" is actually two enormous stones, one leaning upon the other. The vertical surface of the larger stone is more than 21 feet in length, and 7 feet in height. It is completely covered by well over a thousand incised lines of various lengths, depths, and groupings. There is virtually no space untouched by these markings. The outer edges are heavily eroded due to their exposure to the elements, and the bottom has begun to break away, further losing parts of itself.

I contacted Larry Mulligan for the coordinates of the Pluias Na Scriob, and he gave me........ 51 degrees 45' 47"N and 9 degrees 41' 26"W. Converting this to Irish National Grid coordinates and plotting it on the OS Discovery map 84, the site is on the southern slope of Droppa (Stuice an Iolair) and a mile or so west of the Eagle's Nest in the Caha Mountains.

I have read your comments and looked at the pictures of the subject matter and find it interesting. The rock carvings look similar to rock carvings I have been looking for called (sun god symbles) or (checkerboard squares) I have found a carved stone in US (Ohio) that appears to be made for fabrication of a copper sun dial which was used by early man to navigate by. The checkerboard squares I have observed (pictures only) show as many as 8 stem lines and as many as 32 vertical lines above and below the stem line. I have plotted some of these checkerboard rock carvings on a world map. By using a simulation of a copper sun dial (frabricated in the rock from Ohio) it indicates the starting point of these early people. The 4 main checker board squares I have plotted are from Mass., Vermont, Portigal and France. When using this data it indicates the people making all of these carvings came from the same location on the earth. The carved rock I found indicates these people came from the 26 degree lattitude and the 52 degree longetude. Unfortunatly this is in the Atlantic ocien. If it is possible that the carvings you have could be of the same people then the vertical lines would be lunar recordings and the stem line or stem lines should be related to the 26 degree lattitude. At the left side of the entire drawings should be a symble that looks like the @ symble. This would be their point of creation or home. It would have been important for the early people that settled at your location to keep record of the lunar cycles not only as a recording of time but as a means to determine where they were in relation as to where their home was. The look a like groupings could be their anual recordings which would have been recorded each year on the day of the equanox by observing the pos of the sun for lattitude and the pos of the moon for longatude. I will keep looking for new and plotting to verify this claim. If you see any ties I can be e-mail at ([email protected])
