<< News >> A Cuban Atlantis?

Submitted by enkidu41 on Wednesday, 16 March 2005  Page Views: 3518

DiscoveriesA 'lost city', that could be the fabled city of Atlantis, has been discovered off the western coast of Cuba by Paulina Zelitsky, the president of the Canadian-based company Advanced Digital Communications (ADC), and a Canadian scientific research team.

Sonar images revealed 'an extensive series of structures' over a several-mile area in darker and lighter shades. The site is close to the edge of the underwater geological feature known as the Cuban shelf, which falls off sharply in a series of shelves which drop down to several thousand metres, and it is on one of these shelves, in around 600-700 metres of water, that the structures are to be found.

If Plato's account was anything other than fiction, then his Atlantis has got to be in the general area of Cuba and the Caribbean. His account places it beyond the Pillars of Hercules (Gibralter) and in the Atlantic Ocean. The real problem with Plato is his time scale as he puts it more than 10,000 years before HIS time. We know of no civilisations that old. It will be interesting to see how this research developes and what time scale the underwater "city" reveals. How many layers?

More new "Atlantis" books will follow of course and from memory: Atlantis has been located in the Azores, coastal Spain, inland Peru, Antartica, Ireland, Malaysia, the Bahamas and there is even one guy who puts it at Old Oswestry hillfort in Shropshire! Perhaps I'll write a money spinning book and place it in the North Sea! The truth is that there were many flood legends and many Atlantisses because so many coastal habitations are now under water. Imagine a vertical difference in sea level of 50-100 meters and then consider how far out the coastal dry land would have extended on sloping continental shelves before the melting of the ice and consequent rise of sea levels.
