Country: Vietnam Vietnamese archaeologists have unearthed a significant cache of 3,000 year-old artefacts in Krong Pach district in the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak.

“Thousands of ceramic pieces, hundreds of stone tools, including various axes and jewellery, and four tombs were found during an excavation conducted at the Rau village archaeological site in La hamlet, Hoa Tien commune,” Tran Quy Thinh from the Vietnam Archaeology Institute said.

Researchers said the objects reflect a close connection between ancient inhabitants of Dak Lak province and those living along the Dong Nai and Po Ko rivers in Kon Tum province and the Bien Ho (To Nung Lake) in Gia Lai province.

In another recent discovery, a farmer in Dak Lak uncovered an ancient bronze drum that was used in burial ceremonies.

Archaeologists have pointed to the findings as evidence of the presence of the famed Dong Son culture in the Central Highlands region and have suggested that further digs are necessary in the area to gauge the importance of the culture's relationship to Dak Lak in particular.

The provincial museum is currently negotiating with the farmer in a bid to purchase the drum for research and restoration purposes.

4,000-year-old relics spur new look at Sa Huynh culture. News item resourced by coldrum.

Archaeologists in the central province of Quang Ngai have found relics dating back some 4,000 years, encouraging scientists to study afresh one of Vietnam’s most prominent cultures. Dr. Doan Ngoc Khoi from Quang Ngai General Museum said the recently-completed excavation by the museum in cooperation with Vietnam Institute of Archaeology at an area near the Nuoc Trong Reservoir in the mountainous district of Son Ha had unearthed several ancient artifacts. Apart from stone axes and pestles, pottery made by the Kinh people who make up the majority of Vietnamese population, under the Ly, Tran and Le dynasties were also discovered. Together with traces of Quang Ngai native cultures of the Kor and Hre people, the new findings show that trade and exchange between the Kinh and the province’s natives started very early, Khoi said.

The recent discoveries will motivate scientists to look again at the origins of the central region’s Sa Huynh Culture which may have begun in the Central Highlands, the archaeologist said.

Archaeologists have found a large cache of 2,000-2,500-year-old artifacts thought to belong to the Sa Huynh Culture in the central province of Khanh Hoa.

They unearthed more than 2,000 stone items, including axes, adzes, and jewelry, 24 metal items, 190 pottery shards, and six tombs in a 2,000-squaremeter area at the Vinh Yen archaeological site.

Some quartz lingams – the Hindu phallic symbol representing Lord Shiva – have also been discovered at the second archaeological dig done at the site in October.

Earlier, in August 2008, the first dig had unearthed 3,000-year-old artifacts, including 10 ceramic and rock structures, eight tombs and more than 400 stone, copper, and terracotta items.

Archaeologists have unveiled a tomb aged between 2000-2500 years old at an archaeological site in Van Thach commune, Van Ninh district, central province of Khanh Hoa.

Between July and November, archaeologists from the Archaeology Institute and the Khanh Hoa Museum excavated this site, collecting more than 2,000 objects including tools and jewelry made of bronze, iron, porcelain, bone and shells.

Dr. Tran Quy Thinh, the leader of the excavation group, said on-site discoveries have contributed significantly to knowledge of prehistoric development in Khanh Hoa and the southern part of the central region.

The ancient people in Vinh Yen also worked and interacted with residents of the Mekong River, downstream of Dong Nai river, and people in Phu Yen, Quang Ngai and Binh Dinh.

Prehistoric bronze, ceramic artefacts found in Khanh Hoa

Recent excavations at the Vinh Yen relic site in Van Thanh commune, southern Khanh Hoa province, have revealed numerous artefacts that prove the site was a ceramic workshop dating back an estimated 3,000 years.

At the excavation site, archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology and Khanh Hoa Museum found more than 120,000 pieces of ceramic objects including jars, pots and bowls, and about 402 tools used in ceramics and bronze casting.

They also unearthed eight graves that contained bronze, stone and ceramic objects.

This is the first time metal casting tools have been found in the southern central region. (VNA)
