DiscoveriesCountry: China As China prepares to enter the ancient spirit of the Olympics, there's fresh excitement about discoveries concerning China's ancient past.A tomb excavated in north China's Hebei Province reveals new insights into China's short-lived East Wei Dynasty. The tomb is approximately 15 hundred years old and shows little sign of intrusion by tomb robbers.
The tomb is 25 meters long and 10 meters deep. A sloped corridor led archeologists to the quadrate coffin room. The ceiling of the room already had collapsed when researchers got there. But fortunately the fresco on its west wall was still intact and clear.
Zhu Yanshi, archeologist, said, "This dragon picture was done in the East Wei dynasty, 70 years earlier than the Sui Dynasty. But its style resembles those found in the Sui and Tang dynasties, which shows what a great artistic influence the East Wei has exerted on the following period."
About 200 pieces of pottery and bronze were found, including an army of colored terra-cotta warriors.
To the archeologists' delight, an epitaph tells about the tomb owner: He was a member of the royal family named Yuan Gu who died at age 56. The East Wei dynasty survived only 17 years.
