DiscoveriesA skull dating back to the Neolithic era found at the Aşıklıhöyük excavation in Aksaray revealed that trepanation (the practice of making a hole in the skull in order to improve brain pulsations and increase blood flow to the brain) was performed 10,000 years ago.Hacettepe University’s anthropology department lecturer Professor Metin Özbek, said trepanation was not often performed during the Neolithic era. According to Anatolia news agency sources, the ancient city of Aşıklıhöyük is shedding light on the primitive people who lived in the area and their practices. A skull belonging to a 20 to 25-year-old woman has provided the most significant information.
Özbek said after radioscopic and microscopic analysis, a small hole was found revealing that trepanation had been performed. “It can be seen that this woman underwent trepanation surgery. The bone displays a tendency to heal itself after it is damaged. This hole shows that only a very short period of healing was experienced and that the woman was alive when the hole was made. I estimate that the patient survived for about a week after the surgery. Crookedness can also be seen in the woman’s spine, possibly from a fall. Calcification is present; however, it is difficult to state the exact cause of death,” he said.
Skull to go on display:
Özbek stated that the hole in the skull was flawless. “Throughout various periods in history we come across surgeries, but to come across trepanation during the Neolithic era is very rare.”
Authorities said the skull is now being kept in a storage room in Aksaray Museum and will be on display when the new museum opens in August. They added that the museum would also display ancient and historic artifacts from the Aşıklıhöyük, Acemhöyük and Ihlara sites.
