Long Barrow in Yorkshire (North)
A Neolithic Oval Barrow, sited below Danby Beacon on the gentle northern slope of Elm Ledge, it is not in a particularly prominent position though it does have good views toward the north east and Scaling Dam.
There is some debate to what this actually is, the NYMNPA ‘HER’ No. 2751 records it as a Long Barrow whilst the Historic England LIST ENTRY 1018751, latest update 1998, describes it as an Oval Barrow from the early to middle neolithic period which according to the entry makes it nationally important as there are less than 50 recorded examples in England*. Even Long Barrows are scarce on the North York Moors, though there is another one not too far away on NEWTON MULGRAVE MOOR
A précis of the List Entry describes it as being 20m long and orientated approximately north east to south west, slightly across the line of the slope. Oval in shape with a maximum width of 10m, it stands up to 1.5m high. There are also signs of infilled ditches along either side of the long axis of the barrow.
Observation: Though this barrow stands 1.5m high, because it is heather covered and built on the slope, it tends to blend in with the background when viewed from the minor road which runs above it along Elm Ledge. It could easily go unnoticed by a casual observer. By the same token if you go into google earth by clicking on the right hand aeroplane icon from the external links at the top of this site page and then go into street view and go down to the road on Elm Ledge it is also not easy to pick out unless you know what your looking for.
‘HERR’ also has information on this barrow at MONUMENT 29165 where it is described only as a probable Oval Barrow and the dimensions given differ slightly to those given by Historic England. A comment is also made as follows: “Although recorded by the ‘HER’ as a Neolithic Long Barrow and scheduled as a Neolithic Oval Barrow, in the absence of confirmation through excavation, it is hard to determine whether the feature is not merely a mutilated Bronze Age Round Barrow.” Well, for what its worth I have seen many barrows on the North York Moors, mutilated or otherwise and I agree with the Historic England List Entry which states: “The oval barrow on Elm Ledge is thus of particular importance when compared to other barrows in the area. It is a well preserved example, showing little sign of disturbance.” From what I can see the centre has been robbed out but not to a great depth and that’s about it.
* There is another monument, about ½ a mile away as the crow files also of national importance with less than 50 being identified, mostly in the north of England and that is the enclosed bronze age urnfield adjacent to ROBIN HOODS BUTTS 3, it is marked on the OS map as an enclosure at NZ 71031 11419 (my gps).
