Round Barrow(s) in Yorkshire (North)
A bronze age round barrow located above a bluff and though slightly below the ridge line it is in a very prominent position. It has extensive views, east, west and especially overlooking the relatively flat land to the north, with the North Sea in the distance. The Howe itself stands out clearly on the skyline when viewed from any of these directions. It is only to its immediate south that the view is somewhat curtailed by the ridge line, even then you can see still the tops of the moors in the far distance with DANBY BEACON clearly standing out to the south east.
The barrow is round in shape, 22m in diameter made of earth and stone and stands up to 2m high. There is a hollow in the centre the result of Atkinson’s* excavation in September1863. Not now visible but Atkinson stated that it appeared originally to have a low earthen ring encircling it, he also stated that the barrow appeared to have been tampered with previously. Regardless compared with other Howes that he had opened his finds were prolific with no less than sixteen** objects retrieved including nine complete urns one of which along with calcined bones contained a finely polished granite axe-hammer. Worth a read is Atkinson’s own detailed description of the opening of this Howe which was published in the 1864 January – June issue of the Gentleman's Magazine pages 705 – 709 (scanned page numbers 845 – 849) and can be viewed HERE
The barrow is Historic England LIST ENTRY 1018801 and ‘HERR’ NUMBER 29148
*Reverend John C. Atkinson (1814 – 1900) and Vicar of Danby 1848 – 1900 during which time he opened up many of the barrows in the surrounding area.
