Marker Stone in Yorkshire (North)

An old boundary stone located on the south west part of Waupley Moor about midway between the named boundary stones WATER DITTINS and the BECKWITH STONE. The 1853 OS map, see HERE shows the stone marked as a boundary stone (BS) with the parish boundary (marked as undefined) running through it. To locate this, when the map opens zoom in to the top right. However later OS maps such as this 1911 one HERE show it simply marked as stone and no longer on the boundary line, which now dog legs between the Water Dittins boundary stone and the Beckwith stone bypassing this stone and following what would have been a very short section on the route of Paddy Waddell’s Railway*

Whilst no longer on the parish boundary, the stone was / is probably an Estate boundary stone, It is a dressed stone which stands out clearly in the landscape about 5ft high and about 10 inches square, though this tapers slightly at the top. About midway on its south westerly face it has the letter D (Danby) engraved and the date which I suspect once said 1884, the same as other stones in this area, though this is not fully legible any more.

* Paddy Waddell’s Railway - A failed attempt, mainly financial, to link the ironstone mines at Glaisdale, across the moors with what was the North Eastern Railway line at Lingdale junction (NZ 69110 17317) (next to Kilton Thorpe on the modern OS map). It would have joined up with what is now the Esk Valley line just to the north of Glaisdale in the Rake Farm area at about NZ 77740 06551. The distance would have been about 10½ miles.

On this face just above midway is the letter D (Danby), beneath that, is / was the date 1884 though this is no longer fully legible. The mound on the skyline to the right of the image is the round barrow on Waupley Moor at NZ 72890 11853 known locally as the Black Howe. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Waupley Moor South MS1 submitted by johndhunter : Marker Stone at NZ 72730 11793 – Zoomed in shot of engravings on south westerly face, September 2014.Whilst the date 1884 is no longer fully legible, taking into account the engravings on other nearby stones it is more likely than not that this is what it once said. Waupley Moor South MS1 submitted by johndhunter : Marker Stone at NZ 72730 11793 – Viewed looking southerly, March 2022. The yellow arrow indicates an embankment and behind that though not clear in the image is a cutting, both part of Paddy Wadell’s railway as mentioned in the site description. When they attempted to build this railway they started from both ends of the line. The embankment and cutting in the image are as far as they got work...
