Crock of Gold
Crock of Gold submitted by thecaptain : The Crock of Gold is a fine example of a Dartmoor cairn and cist. I wonder just what gold was found here in the past. All I found in the bottom of the cist was a frog! (Vote or comment on this photo)
The Crock of Gold is a fine cairn and cist which can be found just to the south of the track which runs east from Princetown as part of the Dartmoor way, and is named no doubt after a lucky find here by somebody in the past.

The cairn with its kerbstones is about 4 metres in diameter, and still a good half a metre in height. Centrally within this is a nicely formed rectangular cist, dug out to a good depth, about 1 metre by 0.5 metre in size. The capstone has been displaced to the west, and is still laying on top of the cairn.

I wonder just what gold was found here in the past. All I found in the bottom of the cist was a frog!

Update September 2019: This cairn and cist is featured on the Prehistoric Dartmoor Walks website - see their entry for the Crock of Gold Ring Setting Cairn and Cist, which includes a description, a photograph and links to further sources of information.

The site is also recorded as Pastscape Monument No. 443343 and on the Devon and Dartmoor HER as: MDV 6308 (Cairn and cists known as the Crock of Gold, Royal Hill).

Crock of Gold
Crock of Gold submitted by caradoc68 : SX 613 731, Crock of Gold. This lovely little ringed kist, with its huge capstone slung to one side. This is a common sight on Dartmoor as most of the kist/cairn have been robbed for the promise of treasure. (Vote or comment on this photo)

Not everything is as big and in your face as Stonehenge, Avebury and West Kennet.
There's hundreds of small sites scattered around the country that are equally interersting. They are all part of our heritage, no matter how small and ruined.
I see no harm in putting it on the front page. It might get a few people out there interested in finding out about the lesser known sites in their own areas.
They need protecting just as much as the bigger sites. Being smaller they are likely to be in more danger. Knowing they are there and keeping an eye out for them can only be a good idea.

Out of interest, has this site been properly excavated?
