Cors-y-Gedol Settlement
Cors-y-Gedol Settlement submitted by DrewParsons : The settlement is in the bracken behind the shaped stones. September 2010. (Vote or comment on this photo)
This site comprises three stone walled structures - two 7.5 metres across and one 7.0 metres by 4.0 metres. They are linked by a less substantial wall to form irregular enclosures.

Partially excavated in 1956 they produced ceramic material thought to be from the 2nd cenrury AD. There is a field system nearby. The site is overgrown but nearby on the clearer land to the south there are stones which have been shaped. The Coflein reference is:https://www.coflein.gov.uk/en/site/302753 />

The settlement is classified as a "Hut Group (Enclosed), E of Gors y Gedol" (Roman hut circle settlement) by Gwynedd Archaeological Trust and is associated with a Roman "Field System, E of Gors y Gedol"

The above document has interesting information and also includes the dating finds -
"A brief excavation was made in May 1956 and the finds include the charred remains of a small bowl made in oak, three small slate discs and seventeen fragments of pottery, some of which is thought to be 2nd century A.D".

The hut group and field system are protected by CADW scheduled monument ME128 which covers a large area here and includes several other significant sites.

Finding the site is relatively easy if approached from the east and walking westwards along the leat, it is clearly shown on the 1:25,000 OS map. But although much of this large field has been cleared of gorse, the site itself is still overgrown (perhaps intentionally so, for protection). Which makes it difficult to photograph.

The pipeline of Cors Y Gedol Hall Hydro Scheme actually passes within 15meters of this site!(info can be found in a PDF in above link!)
