A complex series of earthworks covering more than 20 acres (8.1 ha) situated on the high plateau behind the coast - one of the largest and most impressive Early Iron Age hill-forts in Devon. Excavations were most recently carried out in 2018 and 2019.

Re: Clovelly Dykes by Anonymous on Thursday, 07 January 2010
Having lived in Clovelly I wandered around the Dykes quite often. Maybe I'm just not military-minded enough, but it didn't strike me as particularly fort-like. I'd have guessed it was just a village enclosure.

I was told, so long ago that I can't recall the source (perfect memory, but the recall is buggered), that there was one attempt at archeological investigation in the 1930s. Basically someone went there and dug a trench. You can still see it if you know where to look - they didn't fill it in again.

I often thought that, should I become a lottery winner, I would finance a proper investigation. Sadly, though 'It Could Be You', it was never me.

I'm surprised that the owner of Clovelly hasn't employed the necessary professionals to increase our knowledge of the place. Then he'd have two national treasures to show off.
