Bursdon Moor Barrow Cemetery
Bursdon Moor Barrow Cemetery submitted by dooclay : Ploughed down barrow at 26868/19974 (Vote or comment on this photo)
The O/S Explorer Map for Clovelly and Hartland (126) shows three concentrations of barrows around the area of Bursdon Moor grouped as 3, 3 and 1 (although it says Tumuli, plural).
Walking the area and examining aerial photographs shows 3 (possibly 4) at the NW, a group of 4 to the SE and 1 at the S of the area of moorland immediately S of a pull-in.

All appear as areas of greener grass amidst the moorland vegetation with protruding gorse bushes atop them and are fairly low/ploughed down although easy enough to spot on the aerial views.

Historic England lists a dispersed barrow cemetery on Bursdon Moor in three groupings, these are:-
Four bowl barrows on Bursdon Moor, 270m North West of Summerville Cross
Three bowl barrows and one bell barrow on Bursdon Moor situated 670m north east of Lutsford Cross
I have not found the entry for the Southern group yet.
Of the NW group of 4, the highest is described as 0.8m high and several have traces of surrounding quarry ditches that are likely preserved below the ground. These have the official list entry number of List Entry Number: 1019257.
Of the E Group of 4 is noted as up to 0.9m high and again some have traces of surrounding ditches remaining although the growth of vegetation will limit much visibility in summer.
These have the official list entry number of List Entry Number: 1019258.

Looking at The Devon HER page, the 'Southern group' is labelled Tumulus suggesting only one barrow here but I could not access the data, rather the HER kept giving me the details from the Ridge and Furrow 'layer' of the map - overlaying it...
