Broomend Of Crichie Stone Circle / Henge submitted by golux : View looking S across the henge to stone A in the middle distance; the ditch running horizontally across the middle of the picture is the disproportionally large boundary ditch of the henge. This ditch has breaks on the S and N sides where the "avenue" passes through (the N break is partly visible above the rightmost stone) and was originally surrounded and screened from view by a high narrow oute... This is a nice example of a small henge monument. Originally, there was a stone circle within the henge and an impressive avenue of standing stones led the way into the entrance. Unfortunately, this avenue was dynamited away by ignorant Victorian farmers and now only four stones remain.

On the opposite side of the henge, there stood concentric stone circles, but these too were destroyed. In the middle of the henge, stands a Pictish symbol stone, but this is not its original location - it was rescued when a railway line between Aberdeen and Inverness was being laid and placed in the henge to protect it. Not the ideal place for it, but better than it being destroyed!

Richard Bradley believes there could be evidence of a 'wood henge' here, (see photo below). If so, this would be the most northerly known one in Britain.

Of this double row or "avenue" of maybe 80 stones, only 4 survive. According to Maitland and other authorities a double line of stones about 18m apart extended from a point 450 yards south of the circle, where a number of cist burials were discovered, up to the circle and then on to a second circle (B... Bradley believed these could be evidence of a 'wood henge' since the post holes are larger than those of a conventional hut circle. If so, this would be the most northerly known one in Britain. Broomend Of Crichie Stone Circle / Henge submitted by cosmic : This Class 2 Henge incorporates a "replanted" stone with Pictish symbols on it. The "Pictish" stone was moved from the bank about 50m away which was demolished to make way for the railway line. The site is easily found behind the garage at the Port Elphinstone junction on the A96 at Inverurie (2 comments)

Notes from my visit October 2016

On to Inverurie for the next site on my list at Port Elphinstone; the henge, stone circle, pictish stone and stone avenue complex that is the Broomend of Crichie.

Being close to the main road, an industrial complex and a housing estate, I initially had a bit of difficulty finding it and where to park in able to visit, but eventually parked in an unused road entrance opposite to a warehouse. From here it was only a small walk into a very unkempt field, obviously used as a dog toilet, within which the sites are located.

The henge is a splendid little thing, within which are three standing stone, one of which is a delightfully carved pictish stone. I assume this has all been fairly recently rearranged. Beyond the henge a couple more standing stones can be found, which are the scant remains of what was once a large stone avenue.

It is not a particularly pleasant place to visit, and all such a shame that this unique site is so unloved.
