All Cannings
All Cannings submitted by TimDaw : The Barrow facade (Vote or comment on this photo)
A modern long barrow built by Tim Daw at Cannings Cross Farm for use as a columbarium (vault where ashes of the dead are placed). The midwinter sunrise shines into the passage.

Tim says "We are using the minimum amount of lime mortar that we can whilst ensuring stability of the smaller stones. Neolithic long barrows were dry stone but smaller inside than our barrow. Lime mortar is a very old technology so isn't out of place. It isn't intended to be a reconstruction, we are building a working barrow suitable for our time."

Tim and the barrow have an official web site and a Facebook page here

Saw Mr. Daws construction on Countryfile. I had similar notions (barrow cremation) in the early 'Nineties. The vital spark would be geodetic orientation. Is it hoping for too much that Mr. Daws had the area dowsed to establish the presence of blind spring and branch spirals? Anyone know?

Just saw this featured on Countryfile on BBC1 today, 28/08/16 - all looks finished, they even filmed inside and interviewed the farmer and the archaeologist (?) who aligned the site with the solstice.
