(Site description submitted by Martin_L , March 2009)
This is one of the extremely long neolithic tombs, that are typical for the Drenthe (Netherlands) / Emsland (Germany)-Area. Although damaged by destruction attempts, the site still is terrific due the enormous size of the chamber and some capstones. Several stones have drill-holes to prepare them for blasting, but fortunately the complete destruction of this monument was stopped. According to Sprockhoff et al. 29 out of probably 34 orthostats and 8 out of probably 12 capstones are preserved. Clear size of this chamber is 25m x 3m (centre) -1,8m (at both ends). The chamber is orientated approximately East-West, the lateral 3m long passage way was situated at the middle of chamber's southern long-side. A rare feature is the constriction of the chamber at the entrance. As a result it originally had two niches on both sides of the entrance (compare ground-plan from info-board). Only the upper halves of the orthostats are visible as the chamber is partly embedded into the remains of the largely eroded barrow.
The ambience is slightly reduced by an oversized information panel (2,4m x 1,8m) placed very close to the tomb and the road leading along the tomb at a distance of 10m.
