Runestone in Rogaland, Norway
The runestone from the Mariakirken church in Stavanger was found during restoration in 1883. It was laying in the main foundation wall of the church and it has probably been taken from a burial from the early medieval age when the church was buildt in or around 1275. It is believed to be from around year 1000.
The stone is long and slender and with a rectangular cross section. It is around 4 metres in length and around 20cm wide and thick with smooth sides and a rounded top. The runic inscription is in younger futhark and contains both short-twig and long-branch runes. It is today located in the Stavanger arceology museum. The runic inscription has been translated to: "Ketil erected this stone in memory of Jorunn his wife, Utyrmes daughter."
