Hillfort in Vestfold
This hillfort is one of the most interesting and beautiful hillforts I visited last summer. From a nearby parking lot with a huge information poster it is a marked footpath to the top. The footpath goes trough the forest and up on the forts south side. The footpath passes over 4 walls on the south side and over the hills highest point and one more wall on the north side. From the top plateau it is a amazing view over the landscape.
The hill falls steeply, partly vertically to the east, west and north-west towards Foxetjern lake. Towards the north the fall is also partly quite steep. Here you will find a wall. In the south the slope is relatively gentle. There are 4 walls here.
The hills south end: Wall 1 runs across the entire ridge and utilizes a ledge in some places. It is rampart-shaped, partly heavily rampart-shaped, and consists of partly very large blocks on top. Very well preserved. The original masonry is visible in several parts. The stones have som moss cover. The wall begins furthest to the east, runs NE-SSW for 20m's length then goes E-W for 28m's length. In the middle of this section is an opening, through which the footpath crosses the wall. The W-most part has direction NNW-SE, length 27m. Wall 1's overall length: 70-75m, width 1-3.5m, external height 0.5-2m.
About 125m N of wall 1: Wall 2. This also runs across the entire ridge, at the ends it bends somewhat towards the north. It is slightly rampart-shaped, built of slightly smaller quarry stone than wall 1. Partly collapsed, but clearly visible. Overgrown with some moss. The wall is divided into three equal parts by two openings. The main path over the hill runs through the easternmost of these. Wall lenth E-W 33m, width 1.5-3m, outer height 1-1.5m.
About 8m N of wall 2: Wall 3. Built of quarry stone of varying sizes, mostly relatively small. Collapsed in some parts, partly indistinct in the W. Here it is quite overgrown. In the east it is covered with a thin layer of moss. Length: E-W 20m, width 1-4m, outer height 0.5-2m. Wall 3 ends approximately in the middle of the ridge. It goes quite far out towards the steep slope in east. Here it comes together with Wall 4.
Wall 4 is built of quarry stone and round stones of varying sizes. Partly heavily collapsed. In the SE, an opening where a path runs. In the NW covered with heather and moss, in the SE almost no vegetation. The wall begins on a ledge down the eastern slope of the hill, follows the ledge SW over a length of 6m, then turns to the W up the slope, lenth goes 16m in a SSW direction, length 17m, further West length 25m, then WNW for a length of 35m. Wall 4's overall length approx. 100m, width 1-5m, outer height 0.5-2m.
Immediately below the N end of the top plateau: Wall 5. Built of stone of varying size, partly also larger blocks of stone. These are probably placed on a natural shelf, otherwise the wall is very vaguely marked and collapsed. Partly overgrown with heather and moss. In the W, the wall is broken through by a path running N-S. The length of the wall: E-W approx. 20m, width 1.5-5m, outer height 0.2-1m. Some stone, probably fallen from the wall, lies on a ledge in the north and below it.
The inner hillfort area is relatively flat with a slight slope to the south. In two places, respectively on the east and west sides of this, it seems possible to collect water. The castle area is overgrown with glistening pine forest, heather and moss. Lots of rock slabs and outcrops. The area between wall 1 and 2, especially in the south is slightly hilly with denser forest than usual. The forest floor is also more luxuriant, but a number of rock outcrops can be seen here also. A local claimed that within wall 4 there should be a triangular "Guardhouse" with approx. 1.5m l sides.
