The Gunnes barrow cemetery is a large and very well preserved iron age burial cemetery located on a small natural forested plateau with a very nice vew over the river and valley. The plateau have steep slopes to the north east, south and south east. It is one of the more interesting barrow cemeteries I have visited and it has just recently been cleared of trees. The cemetery used to be overgrown with a tight forest but most of the trees have been cut down, leaving tree stumps and litter everywhere.
The cemetery consists of 37 round barrows. Some of them are huge and very impressive. Three of the barrows have a diameter over 20 metres and 2,5 to 3 metres in height. At least 13 have sizes from 15 to 18 metres in diameter and 1,5 to 2 metres in height. It seems to be more large barrows here than in many other burial cemeteries. A small road have damaged the edges of some of the smaller barrows.
The smaller barrows have diametres of 6 to 10 metres and 0,5 to 1,5 metres in height. Some of the barrows, large and small seems to have been built so close that they tuch one another. Some of the large barrows also have clear ditches around the edges. A few of the barrows have previously been excavated but findings are few. Mostly burned human bones and no artifacts except from a few potshards were found. The bones were dated to early iron age.
Around 10 of the barrows have the classic damage with a crater on the top but all in all the damage to the cemetery is minimal compared to its size. The cemetery is close to the Evju burial mounds to the south east and could have at some point been one large cemetery however the Evju barrows are from a later iron age period.
