MacD visited on 29th Jul 2011 - their rating: Cond: 3 Amb: 3 Access: 5 Now on the South Antrim Heritage Trail and marked on the OS map it's easy to find. No parking place as such but it's a quiet road and there is a grass verge. Sitting in a grassy field it looks a bit unloved but at least it's still there although not in its original state. The stone circle (more likely the kerb) referred to in earlier accounts has long gone. Excavations in early 20thc revealed an intact cremation urn, which disintegrated but has been restored and is now in the Ulster museum.

Craigarogan
Craigarogan submitted by MacD : Granny's chamber A nice little polygonal chamber topped with a big capstone. The passage is completely blocked by one of the chamber's orthostats....so is it a passage? (Vote or comment on this photo)
Granny’s Grave (which is a corruption of Grania’s Grave which is a translation of Carn Greine = Cairn of the Sun) is an overgrown, low, megalithic passage still roofed, 9 metres long, at the SW end of which is a sealed polygonal chamber which is roofed by a single stone 1.8 metres across.

It seems that the tomb was surrounded by a circular kerb, indicating that it is an unusual or transitional or degenerate form of passage-tomb in an area where there were other passage-tombs (now destroyed) built by the intruding late-Neolithic People from Britain.

~ Just over 7 km NW is the Holed Stone at Doagh.

Craigarogan submitted by MacD : Granny's bad side Not a lot to say about it is there? (Vote or comment on this photo)

Craigarogan
Craigarogan submitted by MacD : Granny's better side Craigarogan/Carngraney/Carn Greine/Granny's Grave - call it what you will. Access is easy from a gate directly facing the site, and the chamber end is the most exposed. The passage is barely visible amongst the vegetation though this shows the better side. A pity it's not been cleared, but I suppose the vegetation is protecting the site from those with little respect for ... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Craigarogan submitted by MacD : South Antrim Heritage Trail This recent heritage trail is marked by these information boards. Nice enough, though the information on some may be a little suspect. Nevertheless, a great effort by the local councils. I just hope they survive the vandals. (Vote or comment on this photo)
