MacD visited on 29th Jul 2011 - their rating: Cond: 4 Amb: 5 Access: 5 The brown signposts in the area didn't currently point to the site - not sure if they have swung round in the wind or whether it is deliberate on behalf of some numpty. Anyway, it's easy to find with an OS map. No parking as such on this narrow road but there is a wide lane opposite which does the job without blocking access. There is a new gate into the field (as well as the old rusty one) but beware the hinge is missing so open it carefully. There is a new South Antrim Heritage Trail sign beside the rocky outcrop as well as the toppled old sign. Great views all round!

Doagh
Doagh submitted by MacD : Doagh Holed Stone The other side (Vote or comment on this photo)
This fine slab, situated on a rocky outcrop to the SE of Holestone Road, commands wide views. A circular, chamfered hole some 10 cms in diameter at groin height was made by boring from both sides of the slab, as is usual in such monuments.

In a significant degeneration of early progenerative practices lovers plighted their troth by passing a white handkerchief through the hole.

This stone is echoed by another, larger slab with a similar groin-height hole, straight across the North Channel at Crows in Galloway.

~ 2.4 km SE and visible SE of the road from Parkgate to Doagh is the impressive Moyadam Standing-stone, almost 2 metres high with a curious “feminising” groove at the top.

~ 7.2 km SE is ‘Carn Greine’, Craigarogan.

The sites have been recently tidied up and I hope this can be maintained...though I wish they would remove the old toppled sign here at Doagh.

There is a groove on the top of the stone, right angles to the direction of the holes. If you look through this groove towards Belfast - on the higher part of the stone, the groove intersects with Ben Madigan (Napoleon's Nose on the Cave Hill). I have drawn a straight line on Google earth between these two points and continued on a South East direction. approximately 303 miles later, the line intersects directly with Stone Hedge. I thought this is worth mentioning.

There is a similar stone with a slightly larger hole in it known as the marriage stone in Caherurlagh, Sheepshead, Kilcrohane, Co Cork.

There a tradition of proposing to ones future partner at this stone. I think the story goes that the two to be married join hands in the hole of the stone during the proposal.

Try http://www.beyond-the-pale.org.uk/phallic.htm and http://irishmegaliths.megalithomania.com/zCrows.jpg for pictures.
Or type Crows, Galloway into your search engine, and you will find sites that tell you where it is.

Can you give me more details of the note"This stone is echoed by another, larger slab with a similar groin-height hole, straight across the North Channel at Crows in Galloway"
I looked on the web site but could not find it, am keen to visit both

A little late, but the stone in Galloway may be this one which is near to Torhousekie stone circle in Wigtownshire. It was formerly listed as holed stone (Kirkcowan), but I have now listed it under it's correct name.
    Crow Stone

The place name of the farm where the stone stands is Crouse, not Crows & this is also the name given to the site by the RCAHMS. The name Crow stone I obtained from a 19th century document in Stranraer library, but I don't have the reference to hand at present. I think that any link between the 2 sites is a little tenuous, the Galloway site is not across the strait from Ireland, it is near the River Bladnoch which enters the sea in Wigtown Bay in the Solway Firth. The hole in the Crow Stone is about 4ft off the ground, a little above what would normally be described as groin high. The site is however associated with marriage ceremonies in modern times, as are many prehistoric monuments.
