| Tremper | Barrow Cemetery | United States | Ohio | Visited | 15th Sep 2024 | 3 | 4 | 4 | Tremper Mound is now open to the public with outdoor museum quality kiosks explaining the site's importance both as a natural and cultural site. The site was purchased by the Arc of Appalachia organization over several years by buying separate parcels. Fences around and over the mound and enclosure itself have been removed. The nearby Pond Creek trail is easily accessible.
Study of the site after purchase revealed that a small portion of th... Read More |

| Agua Fria National Monument - Badger Springs Wash | Rock Art | United States | Arizona | Visited | 1st Mar 2023 | 3 | 4 | 3 | I visited on a weekday morning in overcast conditions. In March the vegetation is not as thick as it appears to get later in the year. The trail from the trail head rapidly becomes the spring itself, and although there are places along the left hand bank heading down to the site, You are likely to get your feet wet if there has been recent rain in the area.
This is a beautiful site, with a large pool at the confluence. At this point the Agu... Read More |

| Vichama | Ancient Village or Settlement | Peru | Visited | 31st Aug 2018 | 2 | 4 | 4 | Vichama differs from Caral and Banduria by the pictorial reliefs that have been found on several walls of elite residencies and ceremonial sites. The largest of these are easily seen at the primary site which included both a a large circular courtyard with ceremonial building over looking it. There are two walls depicting figures. Many of these appear to be starving figures, while others may be either be in the midst of some sort of exclamatio... Read More |

| Caral | Ancient Village or Settlement | Peru | Visited | 31st Aug 2018 | 2 | 5 | 3 | A wonderful and astonishing place. Caral is surrounded by hills on all sides; the entry to the site is generally along the Supe River coming from the coast and the Pan-American highway. For late August we were very lucky as the dense coastal overcast broke the afternoon we were there and held off until the sun began to set. Once away from the river valley itself the Peruvean coast is arid and the pyramids of Caral exist in this stark landscap... Read More |

| Cerro Sechin | Ancient Temple | Peru | Visited | 3rd Sep 2018 | 3 | 4 | 4 | "Cerro" is the actual hill immediately behind where this structure was built. A path along the hillside above the building was described by our guide as being a modern structure meant to prevent erosion and landslides, but I'm not certain that this wasn't a translating error on our part.
A common theory about the building is that incised slabs of warriors and the dead were put into place as a combination of a warning to those who might oppose t... Read More |

Its completely surrounded by mango orchards ("Mangos are money." said our guide.) If you are shown where to climb up on paths and among the sharp edged rock pieces that make up the structure, you can see foundations of rooms, platforms, and an area in the central mound made from piled adobe. This is a stark and exposed site. Awesome and intimidating.

| Museo Tumbas Reales de Sipán | Museum | Peru | Visited | 7th Sep 2018 | 4 | 5 | 5 | A very fine museum, well laid out, sympathetic lighting and adequate signage in Spanish and English. | White Tank Mountains Petroglyphs | Rock Art | United States | Arizona | Visited | 12th Mar 2018 | 4 | 5 | 3 | A large regional park in the desert mountains to the west of the Phoenix area. Petroglyphs attributed to the Hohokam (most are abstract and not clearly representational.) The concentrations of these glyphs are on the Waterfall Canyon trail and the Black Rock trail, but can also be seen in other places in the park. | ||

| Deer Valley Petroglyph Preserve | Rock Art | United States | Arizona | Visited | 15th Mar 2018 | 3 | 4 | 4 | A site with many, many individual glyphs. Take binoculars to better appreciate the art, which includes both representational figures and those that appear much more abstract. A very well presented site with easy access on a flat quarter mile sand, gravel and concrete footpath. (Wheel chair access with minor assistance is possible on the trail.) |

| Koerbelitz Steingrab | Chambered Tomb | Germany | Saxony-Anhalt | Visited | 1st May 2010 | 2 | 4 | 4 | On a whim, we turned off the highway when we saw a sign, and then we kept following signs until we arrived. An interesting combination of the tomb and the wind turbines beyond it, I was impressed by the local sense of ownership. In addition to access and a place to park there was a low table for picnics complete with a flower arrangement. | ||
| Common Fields | Artificial Mound | United States | Missouri | Visited | 21st Aug 2017 | 3 | 3 | Used the mound as a backdrop for a series of photographs I took leading up to the total solar eclipse at 1318, 21 Aug 2017. On a previous visit it appeared that a farm road north of the mound was the closest access point (one could drive as far as the railroad,) but the county road south of the mound is a far better view point. | |||

| Tomb of Philip II | Chambered Cairn | Greece | Northern Greece | Visited | 7th May 2017 | 2 | 5 | 5 | The Great Mound was apparently an overgrown but noted site into modern times when excavated formally in the 1970's. Now the multiple tombs and graves are displayed in this museum setting, with the beautiful finds along side the tombs. The lighting is very dim at first and especially when they first open each day, the site is very crowded, but in 2017, the site appears to be open into the early evening and the crowds die down by mid afternoon. | ||

| Mieza | Ancient Village or Settlement | Greece | Northern Greece | Visited | 5th Jul 2017 | 2 | 4 | 4 | The only part of the ancient city one can easily visit today is the Hellenistic theater. There are apparently the foundations of a villa near the theater, but the site itself seems to be grown over. The city site itself is visible as a tree and brush covered high ground, but that portion is not accessible. Outside the city one can visit the "School of Aristotle" and several tombs. | ||

However, you can still hike up to see the fenced off (but visible) theater from the big parking lot on the east side of the modern village of Vergina. | Pella (Greece) | Ancient Village or Settlement | Greece | Northern Greece | Visited | 7th May 2017 | 2 | 4 | 4 | The main fully excavated and stabilized portions of the city are substantial, but one could wander over all the open areas and sporadic marked tombs outside the city for days. The site of the palace lies uphill from the new museum, and is not open to the public. The new museum (opened in 2009) is amazing, with very good signage in Greek and English.
| Cahokia - Mound 66 | Artificial Mound | United States | Illinois | Saw from a distance | 1st Jul 2008 | 2 | 2 | From aerial photos this is one of the larger mounds at Cahokia. And although it is not on an easily accessible footpath, it can be seen from Forest Blvd., south of the modern Cahokia park. It lies at the southern boundary of the city proper and is 430' by 170' (east-west by north-south) and 25-30 feet high.
In the early 1900's a raised road or causway could be seen extending north from this mound toward the central area of Cahokia. The cause... Read More |

| Fewkes | Artificial Mound | United States | Tennessee | Visited | 4th Aug 2007 | 2 | 4 | 4 | Four visible mounds. This day trip will take you to a 1,500 year old ruin of a Hohokam village, Pueblo Grande, a butte where the Hohokam left petrogyphs, and the ruin of a Hohokam farmstead - a "suburb" of Pueblo Grande. All the sites are accessible by public transportation and walks on either city streets or maintained trails. The trip could take as little as two and a half hours or as much as five hours, but four ... Read More |

Site interpretation is quite good considering that the park is not monitored for much of its opening times (basically dawn to dusk, daily.) | Tippett Mound | Artificial Mound | United States | Ohio | Visited | 25th Jun 2011 | 4 | 4 | 2 | I hiked to this mound from the north entrance of the Taft Reserve. There is a pictorial trail map on a display in a parking area that clearly identifies the mound. The most direct routes appears to be on a trail that starts as a rough, grassy lane from the north east corner of the property, along a fence line, but through woods. Basically stay to the left at all junctions until you find a post marked "9", then turn right. You will very quickl... Read More |

| Grand Village of Natchez Indians | Ancient Village or Settlement | United States | Mississippi | Visited | 1st Oct 2011 | 2 | 3 | 4 | Interesting site for a short visit. The mounds are reconstructions based on the footprints discovered during excavations. And the layout tells you something about the size of the village.
The small museum is worth a visit, as is a trip to the huge Emerald Mound, outside of Natchez. A comparison of the collossal Emerald Mound ceremonial site to this modest one, seemed to me to tell a lot about the devastation caused by the introduction of "O... Read More |

What you see is a restoration, although when the mound of collected dust, dirt, and fallen masonary was removed and examined, it was obvious that the building never had a roof. In that and other features, tt's quite different architecturally from any other sites at Mesa Verde or other places in the area.
