Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: Scotland (Perth and Kinross)
Visited: Would like to visit

The Fowlis Wester Circles submitted by Nick on 5th Nov 2002. Half a mile above the village of Fowlis Wester is an area where parking is possible. From there it is around 400m walk up a rough track to the outlier, which is clearly visible. Both circles are in a fairly ruinous condition. The 6ft outlier is around 40 feet to the NE of the eastern circle. The eastern circle comprises 9 remaining stones, graded to the SW (pointing to the 2-stone row at Crofthead), with a kerb cairn enclosed within, also graded in the same direction. There are 3 cupmarks o...

Croft Moraig submitted by Nick on 5th Nov 2002. From Aberfeldy take the A827 west towards Kenmore. About 6 kilometres along this road on the left (south side) is a small road leading to Tullichuil farm. Park carefully at this entrance, and there is a gate leading in to the field on the west side of the road. The circle is plainly visible from here. Ensure the gate is shut properly as there are often sheep in the field. There is a good information board here outlining the history of the site, which has three distinct phases. Initially fo...

On Rousay this is a two-storied stalled cairn, one of only two known. The round cairn is about 30' in diameter. The lower chamber, reached by a 19' passage, is about 12' long x 5' wide x 5' high, and is divided into 4 cells by upright slabs. The upper chamber, whose floor is the celing of the lower chamber, is reached by an 11' long passage, and is divided into 2 compartments. The cairn is built on a hill so each passage is at ground level, one on the uphill side, the other on the dow...

Haylie submitted by mickm on 22nd Jan 2005. Haylie burial chamber, also known as Haco’s Tomb is situated on a shelf on the hillside overlooking Largs. This Clyde type chamber is all that remains of what was an enormous cairn that was known as Margaret’s Law. It was completely destroyed in 1772 when over 15,000 cartloads of stone were removed, revealing the chamber. Human remains and urns were said to have been found and when the chamber was excavated by Aitken & Marshall in 1954 parts of 2 skulls & other human bones were recovered (He...
