Log Text: Barsloisnoch cists are only to be found by those looking for them. They lie in marshy pasture land adjacent to Barsloisloch Farm. Barsloisnoch SE cist has an impressive capstone, well worth a small detour while visiting the Kilmartin sites.

Log Text: Kilchoan Chambered Cairn is located c. 150 yards NW of Kilchoan Lodge. On my visit there was a herd of bullock around the cairn, churning the grass to mud. The jumble of large stones become a large passage and chamber with time and imagination. The site is off the beaten track but more than rewards the expenditure of energy.

Log Text: Antiquarians are spoiled for choice in Kilmartin. Ballymeanoch complex is a worthwhile visit consisting of a kerb cairn, stone row, a stone pair and a henge. It requires some time and exploration to make sense of the complex. The concentration of sites in a small area implies that Ballymeanoch was important to the ancient people.

This Kerb cairn in know exception, being on private land the farmer has kindly fenced it off with pubic access to severely Neolithic/Bronze age features in this field.

Log Text: I can never resist visiting a souterrain, especially when you can crawl inside it. The passage of Claigan Souterrain is low and wet but it is possible to get inside.

Its a cracking little barrow, with the most wonderful passage and chambers inside, and the powers that be have even left a decent sized area around it free of any farming activity. A lovely sunny day, but some of the walk to the barrow was horrendously muddy.
The fields around the barrow had recently been ploughed, a crop of beet of some sort having been the last grown. While walking back after my visit, I found a bit of the lovely golden colou...

Avebury Aerial 0507 submitted by JJ on 4th Nov 2003. Here's my theory: As you can see, the shadows cast on the western side of the circle point to the exact spot for the next stone in line. Perhaps this is why Avebury is more hexagonal in shape than round.
Based on this assumption, then it would be easy to work out the heights of the missing stones without too much difficulty. Maybe the distance between each stone along this side was calculated not by 'linear measurement' but rather set by the preceding stone and shadow cast.

Log Text: I enjoyed my visit to Avebury Circle but i have two reservations:
1) I found the scale of the circle too large to take in as a whole. It was difficult to imagine the overall plan. Subsequent views of aerial shots have given me a better impression of the monument.
2) The construction of houses and a road within the henge spoiled the antiquity of the site for me. I would have liked to have seen the circle in its original condition.

I would point out that the henge itself is now thought to have been built after the timbers decayed.

Log Text: The Fairy's Chest is a large cuboid boulder which measures c. 10m x 3m x 3m and has unusually flat surfaces. It is c. 20 yards W of the path between the wood and the moor, located c. 1.4 miles along my walking route from Embsay Reservoir Car Park. My walking route is viewable on Fairy's Chest (Embsay Moor).

This so called ‘dolmen’ was described by antiquarian J.D. Sainter in his book ‘Scientific Rambles Round Macclesfield’ in 1878:
"At a short distance south of Rock Hall, there may be observed on the opposite side of Hen Cloud a block of gritstone, which upon approaching it, is found to be rested or balanced, in the first place, upon a short edge of rock and then upon two upright and pointed pilla...

Log Text: The Bawd Stone is located between The Roaches and Hen Cloud. It may be a natural boulder enhanced to locate a burial below the massive stone. The setting is certainly spectacular.
There is parking available at SK0061961882 c. 30 yards SE of the start of the path. Follow the path for c. 300 yards uphill to reach a crossroad. Turn R for c. 30 yards until a faint path veers L. Take this path E for c. 50 yards to reach the Bawd Stone.
