Log Text: The story of Eagle Cairn (Cardryne) is a familiar one: an impressive ancient monument destroyed by farming. The cairn stones were used to build dry stane dykes and the land to grow crops. The site is still impressive and worth a visit. See comments for directions.

Cairn Hill (Cairnryan)

Cairn Hill (Cairnryan)

Cairn Hill (Cairnryan) submitted by markj99 on 4th Jul 2024. Cairn Hill (Cairnryan) Cairn viewed from ESE.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Having read the Canmore description, I expected to see a rough circle of scattered stones on the summit of Cairn Hill. The current state of the cairn is a barely perceptible low grassy mound. I suppose nearby dry stane dykes could account for the disappearance of the cairn stones. On the plus side, there are extensive views from the summit trig point.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Pinbreck Hill Cairn is in the middle of nowhere, ruined and on the summit of a pathless hill. My philosophy is that there is more satisfaction to be gained from finding this site than being one of hundreds of people at Stonehenge.

Lagwine

Lagwine submitted by markj99 on 27th Jul 2024. E-W Axis of Lagwine Cairn viewed from E.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Lagwine Cairn is a well preserved stony cairn given its proximity to civilisation. A stone ridge measuring c. 50 ft E-W, 30 feet N-S and 4 feet high has been preserved in rough pasture. On my first visit the knoll was occupied by beef cattle and calves, a dangerous proposition. I opted to revisit at a later date. Fortunately the livestock were in an adjacent field so I was able to survey the cairn at my leisure.

Log Text: It took detailed planning and cost me a lot of energy to find this cairn, literally in the middle of nowhere. However seeing the mound rising above the chaos of tree debris made it all worthwhile.
