Doon Castle (Broch)

Doon Castle (Broch) submitted by Andy B on 18th Apr 2010. A much better view of the landmark on a pleasant February day as promised after my first photo of this. Copyright Colin McDonald and licensed for reuse under the Creative Commons Licence.

Log Text: Doon Castle Broch is my favourite local site to visit. The name may be confusing to some people because there is a Doon Castle in Ayrshire on Loch Doon. Doon Castle Broch is on Ardwell Point in Dumfries and Galloway.
A site of this quality deserves more visitors however the isolated location discourages people. There is the problem of the rocky road after West Ardwell Farm however it just requires careful driving on a short stretch to reach the Ardwell Bay car park. There is a sandy beach for non-antiquarians to amuse themselves while TMAers visit Doon Castle.

Doubler Stones

Doubler Stones submitted by DavidRaven on 18th May 2003. Two large rocks, weathered into curious forms. The upper surface of one has distinct cup-and-ring carvings. Even when the moor is teeming with visitors, this backwater is usually empty of folk.

Log Text: These curious rocks are located on the edge of moorland. They are best accessed from the W via a track starting at SE 06585 46318 off Light Bank Lane.

Down Tor cairn

Down Tor cairn submitted by TheCaptain on 21st Nov 2010. About 50 metres to the northwest of the beautiful cairn circle, around the edge of the hillside, is the remains of another cairn, 14 metre diameter and more than a metre high. There are no signs of any kerb stones or structure within the cairn.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: It would be easy to miss this ruined cairn due to its proximity to the more impressive cairn on the WSW end of the stone row: it's always a good idea for antiquarians to investigate any suspicious mounds to avoid missing out.

Down Tor stone row

Down Tor stone row submitted by TimPrevett on 10th Jun 2002. This is where it all began for me: Down Tor, on Dartmoor. A chance encounter on a beautiful day and night with an awesome stone circle and row. This is where the stones bug bit me! Taken with a simple automatic 35mm camera.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The majority of the stones are not tall but this stone row set in isolated moorland has a tremendous presence in this bleak landscape. It is the pick of the multiple sites concentrated in this area.

Dowth Passage Grave

Dowth Passage Grave submitted by jeffrep on 11th Aug 2009. South Entrance, Dowth Passage Tomb, County Meath, Ireland.

Log Text: Dowth Passage Tomb has survived despite Man's best efforts to destroy it. It is the antithesis of Newgrange, an over-restored monument c. 1 mile S of Dowth Passage Tomb. Unfortunately the entrances were locked denying access to the passages and chambers of the mound.

Drannandow Chambered Cairn

Drannandow Chambered Cairn

Drannandow Chambered Cairn submitted by rogerkread on 1st May 2013. Drannandow chambered cairn showing its proximity to Napper's Cottage.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Drannandow Chambered Cairn is located c. 50 yards NNW of Nappers Cottage in the Moor of Drannandow. The long cairn has been extensively robbed on the E half leaving only an exposed chamber orientated E-W. The W half has scattered stones and remains of 4 lateral chambers in varying states of preservation. It is likely that Nappers Cottage was constructed from robbed cairn stones.

Drannandow S

Drannandow S

Drannandow S submitted by markj99 on 21st Jul 2021. Shepherd's Cairn in centre of Drannandow S Cairn viewed from S.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: It is a general rule of thumb that the impressiveness of a site is inversely proportional to the difficulty in reaching the site: Drannandow Chambered Cairn, a relatively well-preserved long cairn, is reached by a c. 2 mile walk along reasonable tracks and Drannandow S Cairn requires a further 600 yards detour S over rough moorland to a small grassy mound topped by a shepherds cairn.

Log Text: It is easy to park in a lay-by off the A30 at SW 4372 2837, c. 100 yards SW of the 30 mph limit on the SW of Drift. The Drift Stones are a well matched pair of tall standing stones easily accessed by a gateway if the field is not in crop.

Droughduil Mote

Date Added: 3rd Sep 2025
Site Type: Timber Circle Country: Scotland (Dumfries and Galloway)
Visited: Yes on 14th Oct 2018. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 4 Access 4

Droughduil Mote

Droughduil Mote submitted by andyturner on 9th Apr 2004. NX148567 Dunragit, by Stranraer, Dumfries & Galloway. Originally thought to be the earth mound of a 12th century castle, recent excavation has now shown the Mote to be contemporary with an adjacent system of three massive concentric timber circles dated approx 2500 BC.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I have known about Droughdool Mote for most of my life since I live locally. It was always considered as a motte until the early 2000's: a archaeological dig in Dunragit uncovered 3 timber circles parallel to the A75. It also excavated Droughdool Mote, producing an unexpected construction date of c. 2500 BC, contemporaneous with the timber circles. The man-made mound may have provided a overview of the now destroyed timber circles.

Log Text: Druidtemple Clava Cairn is hidden in a square wood on the southern edge of Inverness, the trees protecting it from the encroaching houses. There are several standing stones, survivors of an outer stone circle and an almost intact kerb defining the cairn. The monument is encircled by mature trees.

Log Text: Drumanwherran N Cairn is a small ruined cairn c. 700 yards NNW of Drumanwherran S Cairn Cemetery. It stands out as a circle of green rushes in brown moorland on the W slope of Drumanwherran. There is a small cluster of stones embedded on the E perimeter of the circle. It can be found by following a 4x4 track N from the modern shepherd's cairn until you reach NX 11116 72105, where a vague track heads WNW . Head W downhill for c. 175 yards to reach Drumanwherran N Cairn. An extended route NNW leads to Friar's Kirk Cairns. My route can be seen on Friar's Kirk Cairns via Drumanwherran N Cairn.

Log Text: I started my exploration of Drumanwherran S Cairns on 28/01/24 following a forest track onto Drumanwherran Moor. I found Canmore ID 61893, a small hollow covered in rushes then heading N to the obvious Shepherds Cairn at Canmore ID 61935. I then headed S over difficult boggy ground to Brockloch Cairn.

Log Text: It is very satisfying to find a cairn on the map, plot a route, then actually stand in front of the cairn, in situ in its landscape. The cherry on the cake is posting the site on The Megalithic Portal, enabling people to follow in one's footsteps. I was probably the first visitor to this lonely cairn for many years.
