Acces to the 8' x 11' hexagonal chamber to this earth-house is by a trapdoor although originally it wa a sloping passage. The walls are of drystone masonry and upright slabs, its roof of overlapping lintels supported on four heavy pillars.

On Rousay this is a two-storied stalled cairn, one of only two known. The round cairn is about 30' in diameter. The lower chamber, reached by a 19' passage, is about 12' long x 5' wide x 5' high, and is divided into 4 cells by upright slabs. The upper chamber, whose floor is the celing of the lower chamber, is reached by an 11' long passage, and is divided into 2 compartments. The cairn is built on a hill so each passage is at ground level, one on the uphill side, the other on the dow...

On Rousay. A neolithic stalled cairn about 50' long x 25' wide entered by a 13' long passage at the eastern end. The chamber (which my have originally been two-storied) is divided into 4 compartments by 3 pairs of upright slabs.

It is difficult to make out in detail from this picture (my other photos didn't come out!), but in the flesh there seemed to be potentially 2 animals depicted.
Hopefully someone will be able to get clearer images to post - it is now much easier to get there!

Kildalton Cross submitted by swatson on 18th Jul 2004. Carved from a single piece of epidiorite in the 6th century, this peerless cross still stands proudly next to the ruins of a church which it pre-dates by several centuries.
