Log Text: Thurston St lot the best for access. A bit of a long hike on the first side trail heading east off of Megley Trail, but one plus is that the same trail brings you right by several other sites. Last bit is a 200-300 ft bushwhack into woods and the enclosure is not easily spotted from a distance.

Frogmore Mound
Date Added: 5th Mar 2025
Site Type: Artificial Mound
Country: United States (The South)
Visited: Yes on 1st Feb 2025. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 5

Frogmore Mound submitted by Andy B on 1st Nov 2019. Frogmore Mound (Frogmore, Louisiana) Frogmore, Louisiana is located between Ferriday and Jonesville in western Concordia Parish. It is noteworthy as the site of a series of ancient Native American earthworks (dating to 700-1200 AD) and the Frogmore Plantation, which dates to 1843. Both sites, along with the nearby historic Piazza Cotton Gin, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Log Text: Like DePrato, Frogmore is on private property fronting Route 84, but in this case there is a convenient side street (Frogmore Plantation Rd) with a reasonable shoulder leading to a residential subdivision. I was able to pull slightly off the side street and park 100 ft from the mound.

Log Text: This is probably the most famous and best preserved decorated Neolithic passage grave in Europe. Not much to add regarding visit details that others have not already mentioned. The site is only accessible via boat and a guided tour. Boats leave regularly during the summer and early fall months from various port around the Gulf. I happened to embark from Larmor Baden and there is a large free parking lot next to the ticket office. The boat ride to the island is about 15 minutes. From the dock on the island, it's a brief climb up the hill to a small visitors center where a less brief lecture is given by the guide, primarily in French, although I was able to ask a few questions in English. From there, the small group walked around the cairn and was allowed 5-10 minutes to view the passage and chamber. Photography is allowed, but be prepared to work fast !

Log Text: An impressive menhir and one of the bigger ones in the Carnac area. However, the ground trampling and erosion is considerable due to foot traffic, and for that reason I deducted points for Ambience. Like the Quadrilatere 50 m away, this stone is surrounded by both a stone wall and low rope fence, both of which are apparently ignored by many despite some signs discouraging a closer approach in the interests of preservation.
I kept my distance and took a few photos. Perhaps I've been overly sensitized by the reality of certain vandalized and abused prehistoric sites in the U.S. and don't want to see a similar outcome here :-)
For parking and trail access, see my Visitor Log entry for the Quadrilatere de Manio.
Géants de Kerzerho
Date Added: 2nd Oct 2024

Géants de Kerzerho submitted by Jimwithnoname on 26th Sep 2010. Site in Bretagne:Morbihan (56) France

Log Text: The Kerzerho Geants are located about 200 m north of the northernmost alignment row along a signposted easy footpath through a tunnel-like hedgerow. There are actually three separated groups of menhirs. The southernmost group is composed of somewhat shorter stones. The central group farther north represents the true giants, both upright and recumbent. The northernmost group comprises a mix of sizes and orientations and includes one very large upright stone where the path ends at a T junction.
This entire ensemble is oriented roughly north-south, 90 degrees offset from the east-west axis of the main Kerzerho alignments.

Follow the dirt road north and stay right at the first fork. The road ends in a small turnaround circle. Park here. The rock art is mostly to the left and just a short walk to the cliff face.
You can also park at Route 162 and hike in.

Log Text: There is a parking pulloff on US Route 61 with site interpretation. However, the mounds are not walking-accessible from Route 61 and two of them (A and D) can only be viewed at a long distance from that highway (the remaining mounds were destroyed some time ago). It may be possible to see the same mounds at much closer range via back roads and a rail line, but I did not investigate.
Governor Nelson State Park Effigy Mounds
Date Added: 5th Aug 2024
Site Type: Artificial Mound
Country: United States (Great Lakes Midwest)
Visited: Yes on 1st Jul 2024. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 2 Access 3

Governor Nelson State Park Effigy Mounds submitted by stonetracker on 2nd Aug 2024. One of the conical mounds right on the Woodland Trail. I was able to locate 3 of them.
Unfortunately none of the mounds is well maintained and large trees have been allowed to grow on some of them. Invasive plants will likely overwhelm the rest without a change in policy. In fairness, the park has a history of vandalism, including stolen signs and broken fencing, which makes preservation challenging.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)
Log Text: This Late Woodland site is in a state park on the west shore of Lake Mendota near Madison WI. Parking and trail access at the south entrance near Borchers Beach Rd. There are two sites. The conical mounds are 1000 ft north of parking on the Woodland Trail. The large panther effigy is maybe 100 yds north of the conicals.
At least some of the conicals are visible but being rapidly consumed by invasive plants. The panther mound is completely overgrown in summer and I wasn't able to see much. Maybe in fall or winter? There was another restored panther at Camp Wakanda but I was unable to find it.

Log Text: The 4 broken sections of this massive menhir are lying on the ground very close to the Table des Marchands cairn. Access is via a short walking trail from the visitor's center (paid admission). The presumed socket holes of the 19 standing stones are laid out in a line of discrete gravel patches pointing towards the Er -Grah tumulus.

Log Text: A Mississippian mound site in Hamilton AL. Parking is in a small paved lot on Old Indian Mound Rd at the corner of a cultivated field about 800 ft east of US Hwy 278. There is an interpretive sign in the parking area.
The mounds are accessible via a mostly paved trail proceeding north and east about 1/2 mile around the field perimeter to the three mounds which are adjacent to the Buttahatchee River. The mounds can also be viewed via a good pair of binoculars from the lot.
Hawkins Preserve Pueblo Ruins
Date Added: 9th May 2025
Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement
Country: United States (The Southwest)
Visited: Yes on 1st Apr 2025. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 3 Access 3

Hawkins Preserve Pueblo Ruins submitted by stonetracker on 9th May 2025. Some of the room blocks in the Hawkins Preserve Ruins, built on a rectangular floor plan. My guess is this is a unit pueblo for an extended family and not a so-called Great House. It's unclear whether the rooms were made of jacal (wattle-and-daub construction) on a stone foundation or 100% masonry and mortar. Judging by the sandstone block remains littering the ground, I would guess the latter.

Log Text: An Ancestral Pueblo site at least partially excavated, consisting of a few room blocks, a midden, and two mostly backfilled kivas. Other archaeological sites exist at the preserve, but as far as I know this is the only one that is protected and open to the public.
Parking and the main trailhead is located in a paved lot at 1490 S Cedar St in Cortez CO. Take the Mesa View Trail west about 0.3 miles to Ruins Road trail. The ruins are another 0.3 miles south down this trail.
