Knossos

Knossos submitted by Thorgrim on 12th Nov 2004. The Minoan Palace of Knossos, Crete. Dating from the Minoan Bronze Age, the first palace was built around 2000BC and subsequently destroyed by earthquake. This later palace from the Neopalatial period had 1,200 rooms on five levels. In 1450 BC, it too was destroyed in a disaster caused by the volcanic eruption on Thera (Santorini) which destroyed that island and the Minoan civilisation. The restoration is by Sir Arthur Evans who commenced excavation in 1900.

Take the small road from the A747, 1km ESE of Monreith, to Golfcourse 'The Lag'. On the right side, just after the cattlegrid, there is a rocky hillock with an Otter statue on top. The motifs are just below the statue on a small ledge. There is public access. A single left hand spiral, 17cm in diameter and a 'grid' comprising 6 near-rectangular squares of 16 x 13 cm. Kleinenkneter Steine 1 submitted by RunaStera on 28th Jul 2004. A rectangular enclosure, 50m in length and 7m ind breadth, is comprised of large erratic blocks; at its centre is an irregular shaped grave chamber which is 6.8m in length, 2,1 to 2,4m wide and 1.6 to 1.7m heigh. The structure is original covering of soil were reconstructed after the excavation. The back of the chamber was left open (a bit) so that light could penetrate the interior. You'll find this great site about 4km south of the city of Wildeshausen in the county of Oldenburg (OL): 52° 51....

The destruction of this monument fortunately was stopped, but half of the kerbstones are missing. Others have drill-holes to blow them to pieces. Most of the remaining kerbstones are fallen. Possible this is a result of activities to remove them and/or prepare them for blasting (April 2008)
