Hekese Grab B

Hekese Grab B submitted by Martin_L on 13th May 2010. The massive 9 capstone chamber viewed from the North-West. Length is 21m, the width varies from 4m to 5m. Only one out of twenty-one orthostats is missing. Seven out of nine capstones [1] are preserved, but due to historic destruction attempts (including the removal of all smaller stones and the complete drywalling) the chamber largely collapsed. Only capstone C7 still is resting on its orthostats. Two other visitors in the background. [1] according to examination by Sprockhoff et al.

Huenensteine Thuine

Huenensteine Thuine submitted by Martin_L on 20th May 2010. Exceptional passage grave with double oval enclosure (only one other example known among the ~1200 remaining megalithic tombs in Germany). The whole ensemble has a lenght of 33m. The width varies from 8m in the East to 6,5m in the West [1]. The chamber measures 27m and had 17 capstones. Only one is lost, but the chamber suffered damage from historic "excavation". Picture showing a ground plan (virtual reconstruction from the preserved stones) from the info panel. Hekese Grab A

Hekese Grab A submitted by Martin_L on 25th May 2010. Overview (looking down from a height of approx. 7m) towards North-west along the 21m x 4,5m chamber A. Some remains of the unusual stone-row connecting chamber A and chamber B are partly visible in the background. Due to historic destruction attempts including removal of all smaller stones and the dry-walling the capstones largely collapsed into the chamber. Chamber type unknown, but the lateral entrance was located between the two south-western orthostats of the central capstone C5. (...

Ildbjerg Langdysse submitted by Martin_L on 31st May 2010. Scan from old diapositive (sorry for quality) showing the very impressive site from the NE. The capstone of the southern chamber is clearly visible. The northern chamber is to the right of it, but less obvious as the capstone is robbed. As at similar sites the kerb-stones of the narrow sides are significantly larger. June 1992

Hammah Steingrab 1

Hammah Steingrab 1 submitted by Martin_L on 15th Jun 2010. Aerial view from the South-west. The barrow containing the chamber was overgrown by moorland like several other sites in this area and first discovered in the early 20th century. Hence the site survived the 19th century when approximately 90% of the megalithic monuments where completely destroyed. The tomb was excavated by K.H. Jacob-(Friesen). According to his research the chamber measures 6m by 3,5m (clear: 4,5m by 1,5m -2m). The stone marked “E” in this picture probably was the entranc...

Hammah Steingrab 2 submitted by Martin_L on 15th Jun 2010. The site viewed from the NE. The capstones are robbed except for one fragment damaged by blasting attempts. Otherwise this certainly is one of the best preserved chambers among the several hundred megalithic sites known in Lower-Saxony. Clear size of the approx E-W oriented chamber is 6m by 1,5m. It is situated inside significant remains of the earthwork, a nearly round barrow (diameter 20m). The ambience is magnificent except for plenty of ticks and mosquitos in spring and summer. Refer...

The two “x” mark the ends of the remains of this large chambered and kerbed long-barrow measuring 48m by 7m . The chamber was located near the centre (marked with “C”). To get an impression how the site originally looked compare with similar sites in Germany and Denmark in better condition. For example: Kleinenkneter Steine , Karlsminde , Grønsalen While the earthwork of the western part is comparatively well pr...
