Huenensteine Thuine
Huenensteine Thuine submitted by RunaStera : Großsteingrab in der Kunkenvenne it is called 1841 A.D. as the most awesome and nicest stonegrave in the Kingdom of Hannover. It has 17 yokes and is 27m long. The grave is build in the typically east-west-direction (235°) with a passage in the south. Very special is, that the oval border circle is doubly. First excavtions were made by officers of Napoleon I. Some stones lowered but in 182... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Huenensteine Thuine submitted by Martin_L : Close-up of the passage-graves' eastern end. Showing capstones C15, C16, C17 and some kerb-stones of the rare double-oval (only one other site known among ~ 1500 examined sites in Germany) enclosure. May 2010 (Vote or comment on this photo)

Huenensteine Thuine
Huenensteine Thuine submitted by Martin_L : Overview from the West showing the 27m passage grave and parts of the double oval enclosure. The 51 kerb-stones of the outer enclosure are larger than the at least 60 of the inner enclosure. Nearly all kerb-stones are preserved, but partly overgrown or deeply embedded into the sandy ground. The 3m long lateral passage is located at the centre of the southern long-side. While the two pairs of ortho... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Huenensteine Thuine submitted by Martin_L : Close-up of the passage graves' eastern end showing capstone C17 (counting from the West) and parts of the double oval enclosure. Clear length of the chamber is 25,5m [1]. The capstones are supported by 53 orthostats. The original barrow is almost completely removed as well as the dry-walling. The chamber is halfway embedded into the sandy ground. May 2010 [1] Sprockhoff, Schwieger in: Körne... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Huenensteine Thuine submitted by RunaStera : Emergency Currency of the City of Freren in 1921. Value: 1 Mark The rhyme on the note is: In our forest in sandier dune, is buried some hune. To the hunebed to the victim stone pilgrimages still father and son. (free interpreted ;-)

Huenensteine Thuine
Huenensteine Thuine submitted by Martin_L : From the South-West: View along the southern long-side of the passage grave. As the neolithic builders of the funnel beaker culture never intended to view it exposed like this, the flat sides of the glacial erratic used as orthostats and capstones as usual face towards the inside of the chamber. Most large stones are preserved, but partly out of place as a result of historic "excavations" includi...

Huenensteine Thuine submitted by Martin_L : Looking along the 17 capstone passage grave from the West. Foreground showing westernmost capstone. The chamber is surrounded by a very rare double oval enclosure. The flat sides of the kerb-stones faced towards the outside of the barrow, but the earthwork is almost completely lost (historic "excavations") as well as the dry-walling. The site is partly embedded into the sandy ground. April 2009

Huenensteine Thuine submitted by Martin_L : Exceptional passage grave with double oval enclosure (only one other example known among the ~1200 remaining megalithic tombs in Germany). The whole ensemble has a lenght of 33m. The width varies from 8m in the East to 6,5m in the West [1]. The chamber measures 27m and had 17 capstones. Only one is lost, but the chamber suffered damage from historic "excavation". Picture showing a ground p...
