Gurteen stone circle

Gurteen stone circle submitted by BrethynDa on 28th Aug 2002. Gurteen Stone Circle SW of Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry. Portal stones at NW. Accessible by foot after a 10-minute drive from Kilgarvan. Ask for directions at O'Suilleabhain's Pub in the village. Note to visitors: if you find yourself in a farmyard with three ferocious dogs, you've gone too far. Go back down the hill and look for the metal gate on the right. The circle is on a small hill beyond the gate.

Log Text: Recent work with a large digger (currently still on site) within a few metres of the circle detracts from the site at present. Also much rampant gorse pushing up around the outer stones. Still a site well worth visiting though.

Log Text: A bit difficult to locate but well worth it. A wonderful example of its type. Only a few minuets drive from Kenmare town centre and then a short easy walk. I shall be returning to this one.

Drombohilly Stone Circle

Date Added: 18th Sep 2015
Site Type: Stone Circle Country: Ireland (Republic of) (Co. Kerry)
Visited: Yes on 1st Feb 2013. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 5 Access 3

Drombohilly Stone Circle

Drombohilly Stone Circle submitted by kenwilliams on 23rd Oct 2005. Drombohilly is a truly magnificent circle, though a visit is not for the faint hearted. After any spell of rain the terrain here is treacherous, barb-wire, slippery rock filled streams, shoe-sucking bog... Bring a trusted pair of wellingtons.

Log Text: A superb setting for this well preserved circle. Could just be seen from the road at the time of my visit but difficult to access due to highish barbed wire fences. I often carry a piece of hessian sacking to wrap around barb wire in these situations.
Drombohilly wedge tomb is about 200m due South, a climb of about 30m according to OS map. Well worth the effort to find.

Drombohilly Wedge Tomb

Drombohilly Wedge Tomb submitted by frogcottage42 on 1st Mar 2010. From this lofty position the occupant of this tomb would have had panoramic views of the Kenmare River and Macgillycuddy's Reaks. There are many other less obvious burials in the immediate area and the site overlooks the field systems at Lehid

Log Text: Difficult to find and to access. Now with woodland planted all around it. Take a sat nav device if you visit or you may have to settle on visiting the nearby stone circle.

Dromroe submitted by ladrin on 14th May 2015. I think that public access is possible. Leave the car where the small pictograph of the Beara tourist trail is. Follow the path about 10 min. After the third or fourth ledder (anyway when you get to the large open pasture), leave the trail to the left.

Uragh SW

Uragh SW submitted by KenWilliams on 13th Feb 2007. This is a wonderful little circle, though large compared to Uragh NE. Situated on a small terrace enclosed by trees and outcrops it feels very private and there are evidently frequent gatherings by people lighting fires in the middle of the circle. Not easy to find, bloody awful to get back to the car from in the dark...
