SW of Kilgarvan, Co. Kerry. Portal stones at NW. Accessible by foot after a 10-minute drive from Kilgarvan. Ask for directions at O'Suilleabhain's Pub in the village.

Note to visitors: if you find yourself in a farmyard with three ferocious dogs, you've gone too far. Go back down the hill and look for the metal gate on the right. The circle is on a small hill beyond the gate.

This lovely site is a short drive south from Kilgarvan village and only a very short walk from the roadside. The views are great on a clear day and you have the bonus of two sites in one; a fine multiple stone circle and a boulder burial placed in the centre of the circle. A large standing stone is in an adjacent field to the south. Worth a visit.

The multiple stone circle is recorded as site KE094-021001-

In rough pasture, to the N of the Glashagorour River and overlooked by a hillock to the S. This stone circle (diam. 10.5m) consists of eleven stones (L 0.6-2.8m; T 0.3-0.6m; H 0.7-1.5m), one of which is prostrate. Two further stones (H 1m and 0.75m), stand radially to the circumference of the circle and form a short entrance passage at NE. The axial stone is a fine regular slab with an internal bevel on its top surface and unusually, it is the largest stone of the circle.

The boulder burial is recorded as site KE094-021002-

The monument is centrally placed within a multiple-stone circle (KE094-021001-) and consists of a rounded boulder (2.5m x 1.6m; min. T 0.6m). The tops of several support-stones are visible under the boulder but they are largely concealed in the boggy ground. The thin slab-like stone, noted by Ó Nualláin as standing beside the boulder (1978, 97), and which clearly formed part of it, has been repositioned on its top. (Ó Nualláin 1978, 97, no. 37)

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Volume I: South-West Kerry' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2009).
